How to generate glacier-heavy world w/ volcanoes?
« on: August 10, 2009, 01:41:40 pm »

Hopefully this is the right forum... sorry if it isn't. Anyway, question as above. I've been trying to generate a world with lots of glaciers and low temperatures, and I continually fail. What do I need to do to make it work?

Solution:
I set Min/Max drainage to 100, which formed some nice glaciers. The entire world isn't covered as I'd hoped, but I'll accept it.

Do you want true volcanoes, or just magma pipes? If you're looking for the latter, the solution is rather simple: keep the temperature minimums and maximums low, then set minimum and maximum volcanism to 100- this will generate a magma pool and pipe on every region map tile. The world generator doesn't like it much- if it whines about errors, tell the generator to ignore them.

Magma pipes is fine... I'll try that.

Reporting back. Using this world_gen, I get a nice, cold world, but no glaciers- just tundra. I've tried increasing the rainfall, but all that does is make more trees grow. Suggestions?
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
EDIT: Oh, crap... double post. Sorry.
EDIT #2: Goblins love it, though. I've seen more than 20 towers so far.

Setting volcanism to 100 might completely screw up the world's geology, though. You're going to end up with absolutely no sedimentary layers. Anywhere. Your civ probably won't even have access to them.

That's okay. I'm looking for a challenge- do I really need them?

You don't "need" anything in DF, really. All I'm saying is it'll make your world more boring.

No sedimentary means no bauxite, for one. So no playing around with anything that requires mechanisms around magma. There's also going to be no coal at all, the only way to get some will be burning wood, so make sure to embark with an underground pool/river, or you'll have no coal at all. There'll be less iron, though you'll probably still be able to find some.

I'm sure there are a few more things, but those are the ones that come to mind at the moment. Could make for a nice challenge, if that's what you're going for.

Bauxite can be worked around with clever use of screw pumps, earthworking, and a certain special stone... It's more difficult, to be sure, but I'm pretty sure that most applications that would require floodgates or bridges could be re-worked to not need mechanisms.

Er, can't you just take an ore like hematite and make it available for non-economic uses in the stones menu and make them into mechanisms? They should be magma safe.

"should be"?  Are you applying "logic" to DF?  >:(

Ores and their metals do not have the same melting temp. And since ya cant' make mech's out of the metals...  it's only bauxite.

Many systems that use magma can be reworked to use water to plug the flow, and then simply get channeled back out to restart the flow.  (Obsidian farms are a natural for this.)

The exception are traps that require instant application - and even then it's possible if you're willing to sacrifice a door & mech, and then rebuild it before the trap can be used again. And even then, you could make alternate routes and allow several uses via multiple sacrificial doors, each of which get clogged up with obsidian to stop them, but the alternates are still clear if needed.

... and raw adamantine.  Not a very efficient use of it, though.
