I was told about DF by my cousin.

I walked in on my parents playing DF.

How'd they explain it?

http://happypenguin.org/show?Dwarf%20Fortress
Article submitted on 2008-12-29 and I started reading website and looking at wiki while at work. Read BOATMURDERED and others and had to play. The first few forts died in horribly dwarven style (tantrum, carp, WTF SEIGE!) and I was hooked.

I cannot find anything verifying this on the web, but the first I ever heard of dwarf fortress was on a TV show on G4...  I don't remember the show but it was during a segment of the show that they dedicate to reviewing free/cheap indie games.  DF was one of the 3 reviewd.  I am sure that I saw this on TV but since I can find no verification I am kind of feeling like im going bonkers.  Either the TV show was real or DF actually called to me in my sleep causing me to one day just google 'dwarf fortress' and start playing.

I know I first heard of DF a few years back in PC gamer magazine or something, but when I played it I was too overwhelmed and stopped. I don't know what triggered me to come back to it in ~December, though.

Around 2,5-3 years ago. I was looking for strategy games in The Underdogs, and saw the name. I wouldnt have clicked on it ("Dwarf Fortress" seemed a rather unappealing name), but I changed my mind when I saw it was listed as a "Top Dog". I read about it, was intrigued, gave it a try, and found it to be pure awesomeness.

Been trying to build a temple like the one in IJ and the temple of Doom ever since. With mixed success.

I did build once a maya pyramid, but since I did not know back then how to lay lever-driven spike traps, my sacrifice method was a rudimentary one (basically I locked the victim in a room at the top, and provoked a cavein on their heads)

My roommate discovered it and showed it to me. I jokingly mentioned a certain ASCII game I had just discovered for myself, too: Nethack. Guess which one I play now, and guess which one still exists on my hard drive only due to my laziness to delete it.

A little over 2 years ago now I was on a vent server for my corp at the time playing Eve Online(I still play) when one of my corp mates started talking about a comic and a catsplosion (this is the first 3 pannel soul comic on DF).  I read the comic and followed the links and found DF I tried to play it but quickly decided I didn't have the enough free time to get into it.  I picked it up for real something like 3 months later(almost 2 years ago), been playing ever sense.

I found it in the xkcd forums where people were talking about how they made prisoners fight elephants. I went to the wiki and read the whole thing (sadly I read about HFS instead of saving it) and then read boatmurdered and I actually lurked this forum for over a month before finally downloading it (I was worried it wouldn't live up to my expectations). It did.

It was quite the complex endevour.

First I kind of skipped through an older version of the DF thread in Something Awful, read a couple of pages, said to myself "Wtf is this a real game or are these guys practicing their writing skills...for 200 pages... whatever", then promptly forgot all about it.

Later on found a newer version of the thread, read through it more carefully this time, reached the conclusion that "Damn, this sounds complex", then forgot again.

Finally found a thread about DF in another forum I frequent, and gaze and behold - a miracle! It had a tutorial in the first post. It was that nice total noob picture tutorial, with included game download, so I gave it a try.

Or tried giving it a try. I ended up hopelessly enslaved by the game in the worst possible moment - a month before uni exams. Well, I got through unharmed, though disappointed by the limitations of my "gaming" laptop. Still, I decided to see if there was some sort of forum dedicated entirely to this stuff. And, in a bizarre twist, there was! What a coincidence, huh, guys.

It should be noted that NetHack is a pretty awesome game in its own right.
