I was reading Lord of the Rings, and the idea of Moria seemed cool. Searched around for a game like it, and found Df somehow. This was years ago. It was a while before 3d. I tried and tried 2d, and by the time I got it (all by myself. No tutorials, friends, or such. Just me, Df, and the ? key) 3d was released. It sorta pissed me off cause I just got the hang of it. Oh well. Df is simply amazing. I've been getting my friends into it slowly.

I was on some game site reading about Incursion and it mentioned Dwarf Fortress as a similar game, so I downloaded it and completely forgot about Incursion thereafter.

Saw a post about it on BoardGameGeek in a thread about SRPGs (Disgaea, FF Tactics, etc), which also linked to the wiki. Spent the next 12 hours consuming said wiki, as well as Cpt. Duck's videos and the Boatmurdered LP.

Amusingly, I played the hell out of LCS years ago but didn't make the connection to bay12games for a while.

Let's see... I first heard of it from a thread at fallingsandgame.com, but didn't try it. I first tried it some months later when there was another thread about it at the late trickystutorials.com forums. Didn't like it then because I didn't know about the wiki. A couple months after that, a member of TT pointed me to the wiki, and I got in to it.

I was playing WoW. In Dalaran, you can fish up something in the sewers called a "Dalaran sewer carp". Someone made a reference to how dwarves needed to be careful around them, and several players got offended until he posted a link to the DF wiki. From there I navigated back to the bay12games website and the rest is history.

Well, I had heard about it in PC Gamer magazine as one of the best on their list of 365 free games they did last summer. I pretty much forgot about it until I heard another mention of it on the Elemental: War of Magic forums, at which point I decided to figure out what it was and went about DLing and playing. And that is how I lost June of '09.

Read about it in Atomic magazine. I work at a game retail store so I've played most of what was on the shelf. The depth of the game intrigued me and once i adjusted to the visuals (my first ASCII game) i was instantly hooked. Can't wait for the new release. I miss the 'monthly version update'

i overheard a person on ventrilo talking about a game where "half the times you lose, it's because you flooded your fortress with lava", then another one announcing "so the skeleton goats are making all my people vomit. there's blood and vomit everywhere."

I don't really recall to be honest. It was probably over some sort of community, perhaps CivFanatics. Anyway, I'm here and ready to ruin forts.
