When I bumped in roguelikes and played a lot of Nethack, I found a roguelike discussion thread on our local imageboard (I am a Ukrainian, in fact).
There was a post: "If you haven't played DF, you haven't seen the roguelikes yet".
I want to kill that poster. He is the one responsible for wasting those days and weeks.

I saw a thread in the Unknown Worlds Entertainment forums and also saw discussions on an IRC channel. Decided to try it out and BAM! Hours and hours of time meant for sleeping and other things spent on DF instead.

(spent a bit of time reading the wiki, bit of time on here, read a coupla tutorials, read a coupla game stories, experimented, experimented, experimented)

I found it a long time ago.
I don't know how, but it was before there was a mac version.
When the first mac version came out, I downloaded it, tried to play, and went "what the hell?"
A few months later, I decided to try again and figured it out.
Mostly on my own, then I discovered the wiki.

Me too, except there was a mac version when I first discovered it. I think it was a mate that told me about it...

I give thanx to NAG Magasine from South-Africa, who introduced DF to us i think between 2004/2006. They are the leaders in gaming for South-Africa!

I'd seen posts about it on Giant in the Playground, TV Tropes and a few other places.  I gave it a shot and enjoyed it.

A lot of DF references on a number of different boards. DF this, DF that, you are not a real gamer if you don't play DF. "No way I'm going to play that ASCII garbage", I thought. Then it was one of those times when I got bored of my current "major" game and decided to give DF a try. First experience: an utter disaster, but the sheer potential of this game was clear right from the first embark. So i watched the entire tutorial series of Cpt. Duck and read the mythic tale of Boatmurdered.
Now I'm spending an ungodly amount of time on this game (army + mangled (literally) joint = a lot of paid free time) and I've finally decided to buy a new PC. I've been thinking about it for a while, and it's not only because of DF, but it definitely helped.

I saw it in PC Gamer's top 200 things we love about PC gaming.

I had seen it in earlier version,s but had dismissed it as one of their overrated indie games ( seriously, I have yet to agree with any of their ratings concerning indie games. They seem to have an automatic +15% or something)

I've forgotten already, even though I came to it relatively recently. It might have been through TVTropes. I know I tried it a couple of times and immediately gave up, before finally reading a few tutorials and getting hooked.

Way back when, I was browsing around Home of the Underdogs looking for something to play, and came across a game.. Liberal Crime Squad. I played it for a bit and enjoyed it. After a few sessions of LCS, I came to the Bay 12 games site and discovered DF. Holy crap, DF. I've been playing it off and on ever since, although I've never come up with anything even a quarter as epic as some of the stuff on the forums.
