I first heard of Dwarf Fortress when Three Panel Soul did a comic about catsplosions (though it didn't mention that as the name of them, of course).  After reading a bit about it, I laughed but didn't go any further than that.

When Penny Arcade linked a tutorial for the game, claiming something to the effect of "Everyone has their own experience with Dwarf Fortress," I thought to myself, well, that's twice I've heard about this game dealing with, of all the coolest things, Dwarves.  Maybe I should check this out.  So I read the tutorial.

At about page 3 of the tutorial, I knew, in my very blood, that I must play this game.  When I got to the page that went into magma forges, I had to excitedly tell my brother about it.  Soon, I was downloading it and swiftly failing at fortress interior design (but not so much that the fortress collapsed... just so much that I got bored and wanted a fortress that worked better).  That was only... three months ago?  Four?

I found out about DF on the Tilted Mill website, where someone who was waiting for TM's Hinterlands to come out mentioned the game.  I looked at the linked page briefly and was turned off by the dripping blood and the title of Slaves to the Blood God.  That didn't look like my kind of game.

Then later, when Hinterlands was closer to coming out, someone mentioned DF again.  I had pretty much decided by then not to buy Hinterlands, so I downloaded DF to give it a chance.  For free, what could I lose?

Unfortunately what I downloaded was a special graphics version that kept crashing on me after about an hour of playing.  But by then I had discovered that DF had engineering built into it and I was hooked, so I searched and found that drippy red page again where I could get the official version.  At 4 AM I went to bed.   :o

I have since learned to control my addiction.   :D

I saw a thread about it on the www.twcenter.net forums over a year ago. Sounded interesting and saw the link to Boatmurdered. I read a bit, downloaded the latest version. I didn't understand one single bit of the game. Funky ASCII, many many many options, ... I lost heart and chickened out. I did try to implement a graphics set before I gave up, but failed.

Later though, I saw that old thread resurface. Took a look again and saw that there was an illustrated tutorial. I read it through, tried a game with the Mike Mayday Graphic Set. And then I found the youtube tutorials. I downloaded ALL of them, snuck into bed at 8pm and watched them all. With some extra help from the wiki, I soon managed to actually get a fort going (instead of starving, getting killed by skeletal critters, simply forgetting to bring picks, running out of booze, getting wrestled by Goblins while I didn't have a military or weapons, ...). I've been playing the game for a few months now. Still haven't gotten much experience regarding the HFS, but I did have a succesful (if hilariously bloody) tantrum spiral recovery (TSR) lately. And now I added Orcs to my game. Massive Fun.

Boatmurdered was fun regarding because of sheer scale of carnage and it taught me to fear Elephants (and their modern equivalent, Carp). But it never got me captivated like Nist Akath or Misurgut did. Those two ... The story-telling is just ... It would make a Dorf proud.

I first saw it on destructoid in a column titled "Games that I don't get." The two games he was referring were Toribash and Dwarf Fortress.  I read about it, and then read the comments.  Seemed a lot of people liked dwarf fortress, so I looked around and found captain duck's tutorials.  I watched about ten before I actually started up my first fort.  That was around six months ago...

Read about it there, some time ago. Didn't try it out, but I did read about it. A while later I read Boatmurdered, which was hilarious but also gave me a bit of a window into the gameplay. Finally, I downloaded Mike Mayday's pre-packed graphics edition, because ASCII probably would be a bad idea for someone with a form of visual dyslexia.

I sat down with the Wiki and dug into the game. I've been utterly charmed by it since. That was oh, three months ago.

The Linux Game Tome announced the Linux port: http://happypenguin.org/show?Dwarf%20Fortress - that's how I got into it :)

I think I'd heard about DF a year or two before, but couldn't make head or tail of it at the time (was possibly the 2D version, but I have no idea). Tried the Linux port when it was announced, found the Wiki, hooked since.
