My brother told me about it. He finds games to play but never plays them because he is too busy. I looked on the youtubes for a tutorial and found captnducks stuff. Now I'm doing dwarfy things like destroying rivers and such.

Yikes, the Orcs have a nasty language.  Traditional foreplay would be right out for them; how would they ever "say my name" for one another?  No wonder Ocrs are always so bloodthirsty and violent, they're getting sub-par action.

It was the fault of that American game magazine, with a front two-page spread of a generated world.

I started playing roughly a month later. Been gone between 40d7 and now. Looking forward to playing with d13.

Edit:
I meant to say the 'front of the article' had the two-page world-gen spread.

Found out about it via BOATMURDERED.

Joined the forums because of Nist Akath, but the prospect of doing stuff on the scale of BOATMURDERED was just too much to resist. So I downloaded it and have been dwarfing ever since.

I think I'm starting to grow a beard.

Came from Penny Arcade when they linked to TinyPirate's tutorials.

Haven't left since. I figure I got 5 more years of gameplay left, easy. And that's not counting on any new features. :D I think I'm probably set for life.

Strangely enough, I was introduced to DF by Russians. I'm  not exactly sure, but I think I stumbled onto their Boatmurdered, but with 3Dwarf images, along with the in-game shots. I thought it looked interesting, and made my way to Bay12.

Was looking through youtube videos and came upon captain ducks tutorial.  I ended up watching up to the episode where he discovers there are carp and gets all nervous.  Funny thing is later on he loses some dwarfs to those carp.  Thanks Captain duck for bringing me to this game.

I found DF via the Three Panel Soul comic and some discussions on Whirled.com.  There was a short lived community fortress in the discussions, which led me to the Boatmurdered story, and of course then I had to find out for myself if that could possibly be real or if they were making it up!

(of course, now I know that just about anything is possible, particularly if it involves dwarves, elephants and magma)

A friend of mine just threw the LP link of BOATMURDERED to me. I was just "I don't want to read some ASCII barf, leave me alone". Then he told me the saga of the elephant mother and calf on a rampage and decided to check it out. It took me then a year to man up and play the 2D version.

There was a feature in Maximum PC magazine, and I read about it confusedly.

I tried to play the game, couldn't figure out anything, and quit.

During my study abroad like half a year later, I read something about it, read Boatmurdered, and then saw CaptnDucky had started making the video tutorials.

From there it's history baby!

I found it a long time ago.
I don't know how, but it was before there was a mac version.
When the first mac version came out, I downloaded it, tried to play, and went "what the hell?"
A few months later, I decided to try again and figured it out.
Mostly on my own, then I discovered the wiki.

I first heard about Dwarf Fortress on /tg/ a couple of years ago, though I didn't download it for a while... I was under the impression that it was just another Roguelike, and didn't put much thought into trying it, as for whatever reason I don't play games like that often, even though I quite like them.

I can't remember what caused me to give the game a second look and download it, though. I think TVTropes, Let's Plays, and Boatmurdered were involved somehow.

I found out about it from a friend when the wiki was still relatively new. I saw him playing asked him what it was and simply said, "it looks amazing." I have been playing since the 2D version and can't wait for more new features

Three Panel Soul. It's all their fault.

Elves do it in trees. Humans do it in wooden structures. Dwarves? Dwarves do it underground. With magma.
