Worst examples of culture.
« on: August 09, 2009, 08:14:44 pm »

Culture, it has it's ups and downs, and lefts and rights, and quite a few other things. but in this thread, we're going to look at the worst/most ridiculous/most funny/random examples of culture.

If you've experienced something on the internet, or read something in the news that just made you go 'wha-?', Then here's the place to post!

Nothing discriminatory, though. Just things that don't seem right, in culture!

Well recently I've been a watcher of youtube, and found a video from nico nico douga, one of the most popular japanese video hosting sites.

It's messed up.

Warning, contains excessive amounts of Japanese Ronald Mcdonald and Anime.

1. weird fetishes (*cough* japanese porn has engineered the rise of some the weirdest)

2. the culture of stupidity that exists in high schools in north america, where high achievers are socially penalised.

3. the icy social climate of my current city of residence (vancouver). many people have noted that vancouverites are some of the most unfriendly in canada, and people say it's way harder to meet people here than in toronto or montreal.

4. people so content with their own culture, that won't even consider the cuisine of another. my husband is a chinese immigrant, and he recently returned from a business trip to australia with a bunch of chinese from china. he was frustrated because whenever he wanted to go for dinner, they always had to have chinese food because "they don't like western food". On days that they couldn't eat out, rather than eat western food they'd make instant noodles. I'm sure this happens in every culture.

Japanophilia
I blame this on the fact that America really only has individuality as a culture and not an actual coherent one besides popular democracy/choice which goes against individuality oddly enough.

That being said, Japan is just weird. Most of it is normal but youth pop culture is just... crazy.

/Asian American and been to Japan many times.

at 3.

I live in West Vancouver in Canada. The people aren't THAT unfriendly. They're just unaware of their surroundings. When going out to the local convenience store, I forgot what my dad said about where we should meet up, so I sat down on the bench. I went peoplewatching for a while, and saw that many pedestrians were acting like THEY were the ones driving the tons of steel contraptions revving up. This old man walked up to the crosswalk, pushed the button, and when the light went up, he MOTIONED TO THE DRIVERS COMING UP TO STOP. The cars were already stopped and going slowly. Then, awhile after, a poor old man with a failed leg, mangled by the looks of it, sat down beside me and took out his drink. I scooched over and let him have the seat. he silently thanked me and took a sip.

It was silent and awkward, but it's fun to people watch.
