a hauling skill sounds reasonable, also how about building carts out of wood to make hauling more efficient?

Armok, I wasn't meaning armwrestling, I was rather implying floodgate-swinging.

Wow, I invented a dwarven sport.  :D

Yeah, it really should just train strength and speed.    There's nothing more to hauling stuff then that.    It'd be like asking for a walking skill or a breathing skill.

Urmot Grathenkorg cancels breathing: too much water.

Sidenote: Legendary Teamster would probably be a better label, as much as I do agree with Capntastic.

At my current fortress, my Leader practices Zombie Camel Polo. He's the only person playing the game right now, but he's sure it'll catch on any day now.

Capntastic really doesn't know what he's talking about when it comes to moving things having no skill.

That being said, would there would be a significant benefit with such a skill until multiple item hauling is added? It really wouldn't let one go faster than walking speed, and really the slowdown tends not to be that much. Strength and Speed training for it would be nice, though.

From now on, before claiming that hauling requires no skill, the claimer MUST haul ALL of their furniture in and out of their house at least 10 times, if the building has many stairs (8+ floors) 5 times might do. Then lets see if you have gained no skill from it.

Well, I don't think it's fair to say that there is no skill involved in moving objects around, because there certainly is. That having been said, the distance between being a novice and being a master of hauling is not the same as the distance between being a novice in more skilled fields and being a master in them.

That being said, I don't think anything just 'builds' a stat without reference to skill increases, and I see no compelling reason why not to make this a skill if things like 'pump operator' are going to be skills.

A hauling skill, if ever implemented, would probably best cover the ability to haul multiple items at the same time. Especially heavy ones. A novice hauler could only lug one heavy object like a hunk of ore or a door or something, but could carry a few crafts. A legendary hauler could probably haul three hunks of the heaviest ore available.

But I have to agree, it doesn't seem all that necessary. It'd just be a really easy to train skill to stat-boost your dwarves.

If anything, strength should act as a hauling skill, making the dwarf able to haul multiple items with better efficiency.

Maybe hauling skill could be capped at something like proficient or competent.
