Stopping Dwarfs from Fearing water
« on: August 09, 2009, 04:53:37 pm »

I have a bunch of stones underwater (between 7 and 5 height) and I wanted my dwarfs to clear it. But since I cannot remove the water I decided that I should try to mod the fear of water out of the dwarfs.

My attempt was to make them amphibious, but giving them this tag didn't work.
I thought about giving them the [Swims_innate] tag, but the wiki specifically warns that it doesn't work on PC races.

So I wondered if you had any suggestions?

Drain water using "for each tile" and put it back when done

You can't alter water pathfinding/fear yet, same with flying.

You could try adding [NOBREATHE] and [NOFEAR], although I'm not certain on the [NOFEAR].

No, [NOFEAR] doesn't do anything in this situation.

Dwarves are just plain afraid of water.

From "Angroshs Kinder" Das schwarze Auge Zwergenhandbuch - (Angrosh Children, the dark eye, german pen&paper, dwarven handbook):
"Elves!? Their men dont wear beards, and their women bathe nacked to lure you into the water and drown you. Thank Angrosh they are as ugly as the day and all big and skinny."

You've got the same problem as me. I dug out a gold vein during the winter, but I didn't manage to shuffle it all topside before spring came (the freezing period is short on my map). Because the water flooded the underground area where the gold ore is, it won't freeze next winter, so that gold is stuck :(

I agree with Urist. Steampunk is like Darth Vader winning Holland's Next Top Model. It would be awesome but not something I'd like in this game.
Unfortunately dying involves the amputation of the entire body from the dwarf.

couldn't you dig a cistern underneath and breach above, draining the water?

One gold-ruining word for you: STREAM. I've got enough gold as it is, but every block is precious to my solid gold plans. My solid gold well (mechanism, block, bucket and chain are al gold) is getting lonely.

Actually no, checking the stocks menu confirms otherwise (easier with something like equipment.)

If you mine the ice out the items fall out with it. If the ice melts they seem to be gone but checking the menu again shows that they still exist on that tile. If it freezes again and you mine it out you get the items that were there.

Presumably if you dropped a unit of magma into that water to cast some obsidian mining it out would also return the items, though I don't think anyone has tried that.

Well, I've decided to go with the cistern. Since the gold is off on a side cavern created by mining, the ice doesn't form, so I can drain the underground pond and take my gold. I was so focussed on getting an embark site with trees, magma and obsidian than I completely forgot to check the unimportable flux. :(
