I set things on fire with one of these.

If you put a piece of metal (coin, piece of foil, whatever) on one, it screws things up and gets slightly dangerous, for the following reason:

If you then touch another conductor (a coin, your finger) to that metal, it's pretty much okay, but when you draw the conductor away, the current arcs, creating this weird burning beam sort of thing.

Add this to the list of things I did when I was 13 for lack of anything better to do.

For those who really want to see it, and can't work out how to correct the URL (no, not you... you can but are just a bit too lazy and/or have already seen this reply so won't need to, but I bet someone else can't) try:

http://tenos.files.wordpress.com/2007/09/plasma_globe.jpg

I'm not quite sure what the OP did, though.  I thought it was a simple "overselect of adjacent whitespace" when clicking on the URL, but I couldn't replicate it.  Never mind.  One can be too anal about such things.

I thought I tried that correction.

Anyways, I have one of those back home I think, pretty cool really.

Hmm. Conversations like this always depress me. I can't do chemistry, I hate my working, I don't write much anymore... it's just a great big pit of all the things I could do but can't, or that I plain cannot get on with :D. I can... um... write... forum posts?

On second thought, that's not actually a skill, is it?

I agree with Urist. Steampunk is like Darth Vader winning Holland's Next Top Model. It would be awesome but not something I'd like in this game.
Unfortunately dying involves the amputation of the entire body from the dwarf.

I accidentally put quotes around the URL in the URL tag, and that made things go sort of bonkers.

I'm tempted to start cataloging what rock types are in my local biome and collecting small samples I can put on a keychain.

If Toady ever makes a game with chemistry or something as a core gameplay mechanic, he might accidentally breed the next generation of scientists.

OT: is that avatar from Fire Embelem, Dakk? It looks like a shaman if I'm remembering the name correctly.
