Need to find stone
« on: August 09, 2009, 02:05:07 am »

I am currently trying to play the game as humans. I started in a place with an aquifer, although the embark screen said it had gabbro and granite.

However, I can't find any gabbro or granite anywhere on the map, and digging deeper only leads to the aquifer. I would like some stone so I can make some mechanical devices, and a gear assembly is required.

The map is covered with flint, although they don't seem to count as "stone". Some aren't pebbles, just flint ground as well as flint slopes. However, when I dig or channel them they leave no flint stone behind. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Flint is a stone.  Perhaps you need to let your miner gain more skill before you can collect a reliable amount of flint.

No, he said the map is covered with flint pebbles and such. That is the decorative coating you get over soil layers.

What you need to do, OP, is read http://dwarf.lendemaindeveille.com/index.php/Aquifer

There is rock there but it's likely underneath the aquifer.

If theres a brook you can get a bit of stone for mechanisms out of them by channeling out the surface layer. Of course, you'll need to use wooden pumps to get dwarfs down to it.

The problem is the stone is under the aquifer. This is why the game warns you when you embark on an aquifer map, because they can eb very tricky to deal with. If you're lucky, you might be able to dig around it if you started in a muti-biome area.

From what I've observed, you only get stones out of a brook if it goes through a stony area - if it's surrounded by soil, then channeling it out won't get you anything.

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.
