Current theory is alien abduction; they're clearly stealing our water. Further explorations will need to go on hold due to an accidental breaching of the Magma Pipe, resulting in a Fire Man loose in the fort.

Crap, they're onto us.

Found another pool, this time completely empty of everything (no cave pool men, no water, no bones, just muddy ground and cave spider webs.)

Also found two pools that were perfectly normal and full of water and very hostile hostiles, so i'm completely stumped as to what is causing this.

What about other feature on the map? Is there anything in common there? Maybe a magma pipe is always present on a map with dissapearing water?

Could it be a circular cave?

Could it be a circular cave?

Definitely UG pools; at least that's what they're showing up as on the Embark map (i have all features set to on.)

Caves are completely different, and i suspect that Wiki page is wrongity wrong; they're UG pools that mysteriously evaporate, not caves.

I had something similar, but it had a hole in the side of it and it had simply drained. No mud or anything though. The critters were there however, just crammed into the two tiny one tile murky pools that always seem to be present for the UG pools.

I later drained my crappy one z-level magma pool into there (I had a magma pipe).

The critters from both that and the magma pool provided for quite a bit of fun though. :)

Yeah, i'm really curious as to why some UG pools just decide to evaporate away while others don't.

I've had a magma pipe start a good ten levels down from the entrance to a circular cave - on my previous map, actually.

Was the 'cave' right above the magma pipe, in that it was a magma pipe with the top half empty, or were they seperated by solid rock?

In which case i suspect what you actually found was an instance of the Mysterious Vanishing Underground Pool: Episode 2, Magma Pipes.

I havn't the foggiest Watson. I've been conducting investigations across multiple worlds and regions and i've been unable to discern any pattern to the Mysterious Vanishing Underground Pool. Some Pools vanish in seconds, others never vanish at all, some end up half full for eternity, some slowly drain, some drain more rapidly.

I even found the Mysterious Vanishing Underground Magma Pool last week, (that pissed me orf, that was supposed to be my source of magma dammit). I cannot for hte life of me work out what is causing this.

I'm beginning to wonder if it's just some sort of randomised thing Toady put in for shits and giggles.

Well, I'll definitely pipe up (hurrhurr) if I see draining anything.
