My brother messed up his windows....

Apparently, he force-quit the windows XP updater, and now it bluescreens on startup.

I still had a somewhat outdated ubuntu CD, but he doesn't want to lose any data, the installer wants to use the whole HD, the partition editor can't shrink one HD's partition(It says it cannot modify partitions managed by a certian windows method), and can't read the other UNLESS it is currently mounted, and in that case it cannot edit it without the possibility of losing data(it has errors reading and believes it is all free space).

The real expert in the family is out unntil mid-monday.

How can my brother restore windows or at least temporarily install ubuntu without losing some data?

cant he start on error test mode (or however it is called in English) and restore the system to a previous backup?

No, because the files that do that were corrupted by a partial upgrade.
Windows REFUSES to load past a certain point.

How about running windows installer(from a CD)? I'm sure there is a "repair" option. What I don't remember is if it conserves the non-system data on a given partition. Run it and see what it says.

After a phone call to the techy person, that seems to be the likely result, when he gets back on monday. Until then, my brother will probably be using ubunty off the live CD.

Boot of a flash drive, and back up the data. Format the HDD, violia.
