I mean trees actually turning INTO treants.

Literal tree-spiking wouldn't work as the OP has already noted, because dwarves don't use chainsaws (chainsaws are too slow). Even though dwarves use axes there could still be a low-tech-no-magic way for determined elves to combat them. I assume that hacking away at a tree would cause it to shake violently. If you tried to chop down a coconut tree with an axe I think you'd need to worry about a coconut displacing your head. The elves could take this idea and run with it in some imaginative way...I don't know, attach razor sharp wooden slivers to the underside of branches so that when a dwarf takes a swing he'd end up looking like something out of Hellraiser? I'm sure we could think of something better using the base idea.

Just an option on how it could work. I'm still undecided on tree-spiking in general but it could be cool.

You could always go with low tech ambush parties harassing your woodcutters. Would need a slightly better AI and reworked stealth though

Well, sure. But we're discussing tree-spiking (or other passive solutions that may be favoured by elves) as a defence against wood-cutting specifically.

This is a mature featherwood tree. It has been masterfully decorated with hanging rows of well-crafted wind chimes. The wind-chimes are razor sharp. The wind-chimes are tinkling ominously in the breeze.

Could work... Model it as a group that sits stealthed on the periphery and goes hostile on any unit it sees attacking a tree?  It's the 'sees' part that's not really supported right now...

Any unit within a set amount of tiles that has the woodcutter job enabled?

That seems aweful psychic to me, although carrying the tools of the trade should be enough, and makes more sense than waiting

They could path directly to any dwarves carrying axes.

That would make axedwarves the ideal choice for dealing with elves though.

I like the idea of awakening trees to defend themselves more. A treant is a much bigger threat than an elf.

Of course, any sort of actual tree spiking (even with magical spikes that blow up the tree or something) would harm the tree. What tree-humping elf would harm a tree?

Okay, then again, human extremists can justify any degree of collateral damage to themselves so I guess elf extremists could too.

Still, I think coming to live in the tree sounds more like the tree-hugging kumbayah-singing hippies I've come to see them as.  ;)

And if they live in the tree they also have a good position to snipe at approaching woodcutter-dwarfs with bows too.

As for recognizing a woodcutter, that could be fairly easy. I imagine they carry a lot more tools than just the ax, only that they are (currently) abstracted out of the game. A single ax isn't going to help you when cutting wood after all.

Elves will get some more tricks when it's their turn. They could use blowguns with poisoned needles, not only for hit-and-run attacks, but also to get air when sneaking into your fortress via the water supply. They'll surely have acces to herbs whose juice eats through iron or stone. They'll have a number of exquisite diseases to spread. They can incite or contaminate the local wildlife, which you won't notice until your dining room is crowded with dwarves choking in their -groundhog stew-. Or when they wake up and notice that their beards have fallen out.
