Slashing instakills
« on: February 23, 2008, 03:20:00 am »

Slashing instakills are effectively the same as lopping offs. Now, I know this is probably supposed to be this way, I'm not sure of a "solution", and I'm not even sure if it's a problem, but it kind of rubs me the wrong way. What do you people think?

its just how it is... WoW is a good game if you dont want any chance of skill involved in your gaming, only how many hour you spend each day ^^

not saying anything about you, just stating DF as the direct opposite of WoW, the shittiest game ever made

Um... huh?

What's this about WoW?

...Anyway...

Slashing instakills can get annoying, because every single organ you have goes BLEH.

I think the real problem is that armor doesn't lower the critical hit chance of weapons enough, especially higher level armor.

Are we talking about the same thing? Just to be sure, we're talking about, its the slashing equivalent of upper bodies exploding into gore and the like.

yupp, the same issue ^^
i think its cool that any creature, with a certain amount of luck, can kill any other creature.
the only thing stupid is when a deer charges at a bronze collosus and it dodges the charge by jumping of a cliff

You're right on this, this combined with the high rate of fire is the reason archery is so overpowered - arrows/bolts have a 2 crit modifier which is the same as a spear.

I expect it will all get balanced out at some point, if not in the army arc then in some later combat related arc.

Combat isn't particularly balanced right now.  Bear in mind the game's in alpha, and it'll be overhauled completely one of these days.

But changing a few numbers shouldn't take more than a minute.

Well, if ammo was given the [CRIT_BOOST:x] token it would be easy to change arrows and bolts to be less deadly.

Ah, no my friends, you missunderstand me.

When I slash at my foes upper body, it occasionally becomes cloven asunder.

It also occassionally gets lopped of. What's the difference? Bugger if I know.

So this is more of an aesthetic thing than anything else.  :D

Isnt cloven asunder you strike in more a diaganol/vertical direction whereas lopped off means you cut them straight across the waist

"Cloven asunder" means the body part received critical damage and is destroyed. A part is "lopped off" when it receives over-critical damage. Only specific bodyparts have the "critical damage" phase, most usually move straight to over-critical and fly off. Of course, this implies slashing or gore damage. Bludgeon, pierce, heat, and cold don't sever limbs or bodyparts, except in very rare cases, or for non-flesh creatures.

And an upper body cannot fly off, ever, at least in a common creature setup, because it is the root of the creature's body, the base parent part. I've been trying out alternative body designs, but with no luck so far.
