Soapmaker to peasants.
« on: August 08, 2009, 11:18:29 am »

One of my major pet peeves with DF is the fact that you can get an annoying amount of soap makers or another mason when you already have a legendarily one or whatever rather than a nice peasant who'll just haul like the rest of your soap makers but without their annoying title and color. So is it possible to somehow remove the color and title from a soap maker and make him become a peasant? I've tried to use the custom profession to make it say peasant but that just changes the profession name so they still have the color. Any help?

There is no way to remove skills short of modifying the memory with something like tweak. Most people just enable pump operating on all their haulers, they end up with a red colored hauling force with a bunch of stats.

I find it more amusing to have a purple hauling force. Rotate them into clerk or manager one by one. Once you switch them to permanent hauling give them a suitably demeaning custom profession.

It isn't much, but what I do is simply prioritize them over peasants for soldiering or conversion to another profession.  If you get an entire color that you never use - I never use fisherdwarves (they just wind up fishing out the rivers and ponds and then becoming useless) or rangers (hunting = dead hunters) - they're a good haven for non-peasants as well.  You won't have a bunch of peasant-colored dwarves, but the haulers will still be color-coded.

I would do that if Mechanics weren't already red.

I usually have plans to train my haulers into something else - thereby giving them some agility that makes them much, much more effective haulers.  For quite some time I would switch a dwarf to some other labor the very moment they became legendary in the one they had.

... I stopped doing it for miners, because eventually I wanted to actually MINE the ore I found, rather than leave it to languish until I finally trained up another legendary.  But it works well for engravers, pump operators, siege operators, clerks, masons, furnace operators, farmers (I always have waaaay too much food anyway), cooks...

I'm not worried about color-coding my peasantry.  I'm just worried about having fast peasantry.

If I'm reading the planned updates correctly, unused skills will get worse.

Maybe this will let us get rid of the soapmakers by simply not letting them make soap.

Of course, we then have to wonder about our legendary dwarves losing their mojo...

Maybe it's a decay that happens over years..... Or maybe it depends on how much they use that skill.
