Decorative Landscaping...
« on: August 08, 2009, 03:54:45 am »

I don't know if someone has suggested this yet...

I know this is a pretty small, and somewhat petty request...but the ability to shape the flora around my Fortress would be...awesome. To be able to plant trees or bushes, or whatever flora was available.

It'd be especially brilliant if other races(elves for example) could also plant trees and shrubs... I can just imagine it, the elves plant their sacred forests and my dwarven woodcutters chop it all down. :)

Dwarf!  Indeed, a devious delight fond of drink and industry deceived as both do-gooder and devil by the delusions of deities.  This demander, no daft demeanor, is a driving force of the deadly diocese, now disappointed, delirious from goblin deception.  However, this delicious derangement of a demolished diamond stands determined!

I could definitely see this as a non-dwarf ability that would be fun to have.

Shrubs aren't graphically diverse enough right now to warrant planting.

That said, dwarves should be able to landscape, but an excess of landscaping jobs should change your fort's reputation for the worse.

AHH, yes, but there is no reason they can't be.  If you check my Dwarfletter tileset (in the sig), then you will find that the tags that can be found in the EXE [SHRUB_TILE] and [SHRUB_COLOR] and the respective ones of the dead shrub all work fine.  The fact that we don't have them used in the standard game is just a matter of the standard tileset not having enough real art content to convey different kinds of shrubs.  The same is true for the other unused tags, which all work but aren't used because they don't need to be right now.

HEY, you should try my Dwarfletter tileset...it's pretty.
I make games, too

[Used search function, found this,resurrected]

Would it be possible to move dirt and deposit it elsewhere for landscaping purposes? That way you could have decorative gardens and player made elevations (and murky pools?) placed around above ground buildings. Use the construction function allowing dirt? I tend to do this in two ways currently:

1.) Belowground: dig out the desired area in the desired landscaping shapes. Flood to produce mud. Break into underground pool: Instant underground gardens.

2.) Above ground: Cheat. Use tweak's tile edit to manually alter the landscape for my landscaping/decor purposes. I enjoy gently rising hills near my towers and perhaps dirt ramps that form little piles nearby the otherwise square towers and buildings .

Any comments about this?

The moving process would have to be very dwarfish moving process. i.e. ripping out the plant ant dropping it where they want it.
