Blast. I need an actual weapon  besides mining beams and flak cannons.
Yes, mining beams. The basic idea of it is that it's a converted prospecting ship. The mining beams are for, y'know, mining, and the flak cannons are for being flak. Also includes a nanorepair matrix to support long times away from home and a prospecting sensor thingie. Which actually makes a pretty good ship detector, in addition to prospecting. Certainly a lot better than normal, and it possesses a wide variety of different sensors, making it useful for analyzing the capabilities of a ship. Also has a pretty long radar range, though the other instruments have varying ranges, all more than enough to penetrate a thick atmosphere and go a long way in the void. The ship also has an advanced geologic research lab to analyze rock and soil samples for life, important elements, et cetera.

Current status: threw on an autocannon (as a basic armament), not sure how powerful those are.
Secondary priority: adding the 'modifications' on to the basic thing. Need fairly high-powered, long-ranged weapon..

Argh, so much lack of symmetry. Stupid mouse pad.
Hard to see it in this pic, but there's a 'spinning' doodad in the middle representing sensors. I was gonna find some sort of 'spinning radar dish', but I was too lazy...

Weapons include four flak guns and four particle guns as PD (two of the latter are partially hidden by the sabot cannons (!)), four mining beams for the heck of it, an autocannon for front attack, and two sabot cannons (!) for long-ranged bombardment.
Also included: a Nanorepair Matrix and two normal deflectors for defense.

Is supposed to be a speedy scout (possibly stealth if I can get such a device) sniper. Not particularly strong, but it can at least dodge asteroids, if not land on them. With the sabot cannons, it can broadside/snipe enemies at long range, doing decent damage. Fun stuff.
Has not been tested for balance whatsoever.
(wonders if I can animate it so that the Sabot Cannons and Autocannon retract into the hull, making it appear as a normal ship of it's type...until it blows you to pieces! Been trying to do this for a bit (with a modified version I will likely end up using, where there's a single, 360-degree arc Sabot Cannon on the back and the deflectors are moved forward to the piece covering the core), and had a ton of trouble simply selecting what I want to select. Also with depth.
Argh.

I should probably post a profile to go along with it...

Yeah.

There's a lot of good stuff in that topic.
EDIT: No, no it's not in there as Blaster Cannon, it seems. Those are blasters. It's not in there anywhere. I wonder why.
But it is an actual weapon, seems to be a really wimpy sniping weapon to me.
In the shipmaker, click EDIT in the little bar on the left once you have something selected to see and mess around with its stats.
You could probably come up with some fake use for it RP-wise, though.

A souped-up sabot cannon, mind you.
Named Thor's Hammer.
It seemed like the best kind of weapon for a long-range sniper that was an old-fashioned ballistic weapon (so no Particle Cannon or missiles). Yes, I did consider repeating artillery...
Actually, maybe that IS what I want. It's a hammer, not a rifle. *thematic difficulties!*
Of course, either way I'm eventually going to turn it into a Gatling weapon with  a 9-shot magazine, so....

In particular, the Sabot Cannon seemed better against point defense, due to low intercept-ability.

EDIT: Prepare for some more veholding! New version, still could use some tweaks.


Despite being in red this time, the 'scanner' remains invisible. Argh.
But on the plus side, symmetry makes Twi a happy dude.
Well, except for the angles of the mining beams... I don't know what unit they're in (seconds? minutes? something smaller than degree), so I can't really do much about that. Still, awesomeness.
Dropped the Autocannon (now the front feels empty...), but made the Sabot Cannon red to signify it's Thor's Hammerness and general epicness. At the moment, it'll just be more powerful, have longer range, and be more accurate than a normal Sabot Cannon. I'll work on that atrocious firing speed later. Wonder if there's a way the Booster Module can be modded to speed up rate of fire and reload time...
I'll also need something to put it on, rather than having half of it in one section and half of it in another.
Also moved the flak guns from the front and back to the sides, because I suspect I'll be circling a formation most of the times I need them, and there's no way I'm putting anything bad directly in front of me if I can help it. The back still has some PD for obvious reasons.

Still haven't modded the weapons or the ship stats that much.
Also, I'm a little iffy about the placement of the Nanorepair Matrix.
On the one hand, it needs to be able to repair my bow section in case someone decides to come at me directly.
On the other hand, it needs to be able to repair Thor's Hammer and whatever section ends up supporting it, so....
Just how big is the Matrix's range? I have trouble visualizing it.

Hey look, I finally decided on something.
Or not, I just took both options.

I fixed the mining beams by setting them straight up and down. Turns out that it WAS in degrees, but for some reason, you could rotate it past 360 and it would keep going up. Odd.
But as you can see! I now have both a repeating artillery AND a sabot cannon! Both of which shall most likely be souped-up dramatically.
The blue repeating artillery is Thor's Hammer, the red sabot cannon is Odin's Spear (even though I don't think Odin was known for using a spear, but hey). I turned the repeating artillery to the rear so it didn't cover up my fancy doodad, it still has 360 degree coverage (though this will probably get reduced slightly so it doesn't blow off the antenna). I may move it back a little more so you can see better as well.

Speaking of which, said doodad finally showed up. Woot. It is red. I'm too lazy to make/find a better one.
In the front is Odin's Spear, the sabot cannon. It has a coverage of 240 degrees (120 in the edit menu, X2), so it can still be used to circle-snipe the bad guys as mentioned before.
Oh, and there is in fact a piece on which the artillery is mounted under that enormous thing... one of the circle pieces from the stock sections. Number thirteen, to be exact.

Those mining beams still don't look symmetrical, but the ships look good. Have you considered using a turret for the big guns? I wish I knew away to implement recoil...

Just looking at those ships, and thinking that the forward gun can rotate 90 degrees, I can't help but think that it would look a little off if it didn't cause the whole ship to jink off to the side...

Since when did railguns have recoil?
Then again, last I checked, they didn't fire molten iron, just normal iron to insane speeds. But still.
Would look really cool though.

A railgun wouldn't move the ship; or at least it would exert force in equal and opposite directions. I think. Actually I am kind of guessing.

Anyway, not to rain on your parade, but general ship discussion probably belongs in the BSF thread, unless it has to do with the campaign here. Speaking of which, I'm about to update the thread title (no, I'm not resurrecting it myself).
