Hearts of Iron 3
« on: August 07, 2009, 04:37:55 pm »

It's out now, and i played the demo for a few hours.

I tried to see how much i far i could get into poland in 4 months so i bumrushed all my eastern forces there but after 2 days i got a message stating that a 9000 man strong division from france had caused 3850 or so of my men to practically disappear. I check out the western front and i saw that most of my troops were at 35% strenght and were being steamrolled by france at a frightening rate and I'm completely bewildered about how Rommel(4 regions away from the front) managed to get more then half of his troops killed without doing anything. I have a supply deficit but still have 3000 of it or so left and i'm loosing low double digits every day. My hypothesizes are as follows:
-Le Blob is just that awesome.
-I bugged it.
-I don't fully understand how supply works and let half my troops starve to death by accident.
-I missed the part in the history books where western germany was dreadfully understaffed mere months before Fall Gelb.

My only other paradox experience is the EU 3 demo so don't start with "in HoI2 it does X "

Not sure about your first question, but I'm pretty sure it could be because of the "half my troops starve to death" thing. That happens atleast once at some point in Hearts of Iron if your new to the concept. And, actually, western germany WAS understaffed before Fall Gelb. The Wehrmacht were blitzkrieging other countries first for as far as I remember, and the French didn't take the opportunity to attack Germany when it was weak. ( The Phony War )

I actually fell asleep in this game. Seriously. I can't imagine how people are willing to sit there staring at nonmoving icons on a nonmoving map for eons and eons. It's not like it's very deep either, just confusing to learn at first with an overcomplicated interface and a pathetic tutorial. Once you get past the initial learning curve, it's such a simple game of economics. Ooooh, balance all the pretty figures and numbers to make your economy work. So difficult.  ::)

I can't say I'm particularly fond of this. Heck, there haven't been a single game I've played that actually put me to sleep. Maybe this is the game for those people who want REALLY, REALLY, slow paced strategy games. I'm not that kind of gamer.

I'm looking for a mod that ups the speed beyond the max of what you can get. Maybe one that skips days at the rate it skips seconds. Also looking for one that can remove that whole neutrality aspect so I can maul the world.

Try declaring war?

Its hardly a boring game where you just balance the numbers, stratergy really does come into it. (eg, invading switzerland can be faster than going through belgium and the netherlands, but it could go wrong, or the italians could attack etc.

Can't declare war on anyone. My neutrality is too high. I have to spend hours getting my incompetent intelligence agency to lower it for some reason. That's why I want to remove neutrality from the game.

I found out how to enjoy this though, so far. My strategy is to turn this on, select a bunch of tech to research, get some factories built, and go play Rock Band while the thing passes the time at max speed. Usually between each song is when I need to make any marginally important decision. I imagine this is how real leaders conduct important diplomatic decisions as well.

Edit: I'm not dissing the game. I can see how people could enjoy it, but I definitely am not one of those people.

Playing the full game on somebody elses PC for a few hours: '36 and '37 were absolutely boring, i set the AI to handle all in incoming trade requests that come down to the AI wanting 0.08 units of energy for 0.02 units of money, canceling the deal 3 hours later and then demanding 0.09 energy for the same amount of cash the next day while i queue up a bunch of technologies and regiments. Then Japan joined the axis and they ask me for help. I accept, planning to use the war as an excuse to take the better economic laws. The allies abuse the fact that there's 4 of them to basically bribe every single country that isn't me, japan, russia, mongolia and that tiny country between them into joining them. Followed by another 2 very uneventful years in which japan is crushed by basically all of south eastern asia combined. In late 1940 when my neutrality is FINALLY low enough to declare war on anything(even if it's only luxembourg) i notice that i'm the only country in europe who isn't with the allies, so following a few short months of fighting and a joint campaign by every single allied nation that can best be summed up as "ZERG RUSH KEKEKE" my attempt at creating the third reich ends with sweden occupying berlin.

I absolutely loved HOI2, but I've heard that HOI3 is buggy, and runs way slower than it should, so I'm waiting till it gets a few patches, and maybe an expansion.

were you Germany? That is indeed very odd. Germans took over numerous countries before Fall Weiss (what is seem by most as the begging of WWII), and even that happened in mid '39...
other than that, it's true that everyone in Europe who wasn't a puppet of Germany, was part of the Allies (the only notable exception being Switzerland).
You could also say that everyone in Indochina was part of the allies too, but that is (de jure) untrue. There was no real alliance there- India was full of Nazi sympathizers (including Ghandi), and the Chinese were a set of warring factions who hated each other only marginally less then they hated the Japanese, not that they were (in general) fond of the British.

Yeah, I have to say after playing this for a bit that it's difficult to get into. I mean, in principle, it's a war game in which actually getting to the point where you can declare war is harder than actually fighting it.

Anyway, I'm going to try to get Bhutan to take over the world.

It's June of 1939 and Germany has already conquered the whole of Europe with Tigers and Panthers. The Axis powers consists only of Italy and Germany because every other person refuses to have anything to do with me (I have no idea why either, but I assume it's because I started the second World War). Allies consists of everyone who isn't Soviet... including Japan... I can't declare peace because the game doesn't allow you to offer peace to pact members and it's probably impossible for me to hunt down and kill every single bloody country in the whole damn world. So the Germans and Italians are forced to fight. Forever.

Interestingly enough, the closest threat rating would be Japan, with 19.1. Mine is 241.

The biggest problem is that the allies effectively start with 4 countries(poland and SA joining up with them almost immediately) so they have a massive pool of diplomatic power they can use to eat everything floating between them and the axis, which only consists of germany. Japan got crushed not because of allied intervention but because they pissed off everybody in the region at the same time. Every country that joins the axis immediately has their neutrality lowered and starts wantonly attacking everything in sight, if that's italy first(ie, the allies didn't gang up on it), the axis powerbase in europe is strong enough to survive usually but when the already failing japan begs for help and the allies gobble up anything they are at war with, you end up with the entire world breathing down your neck for either being at war with them or for abandoning other nations from your own corner.

And the fact that i either have to put up with the sheer insanity of trade deals or risk letting the ai automanage diplomacy and spending all of my influence on desperately getting ethiopia to join the axis before italy conquers them.

Now Germany controls all of North Africa, Spain, Europe and is stuck in Greece + Turkey. I have no clue how to extend my supply lines all the way there other than to land an invasion force in Yugoslavia to hopefully clear a route. The UK has no air force, no navy, and is practically stuck inside its stupid island while it gets bombed to oblivion. The US lost all its navy fighting my escorts for a 1 supply ship convoy. Nothing can fight me. No nation in the world is strong enough to challenge even one of my 5 grand armies (Russia, Baltic, Africa, North, West). The number of divisions I have outnumbers even the USSR.

I've more or less won the game. Italy no longer exists, so the only real Axis member is me. I occasionally see my cute puppet nation of Romania come flying with tanks and planes to help me out, but really.... no one can beat the might of the Reich. And it's still September of 1939.
