That looks like a brook, can't your dwarves walk on it?

Ish.

AFAIK the wagon spawns in the exact centre of the map.
It doesn't care if that is underwater, or even magma (actually happened to me once)

I'm jealous of your starting location. You can dig right into the wall there for an entrance or a water access point and not have to haul your starting gear a far distance to get it inside.

I hate it when you spawn 1/2 across the map from where you want your entrance.

(I see you have two cats there. Uh oh.)

You have really easy access to an infinite source of water where you are right now, so that's pretty cool. Also if you dig from there your forress will be easily defendable, since goblins will have to enter the brook chasm to even get close to attacking you, giving you time to perforate them.

Two cats really isn't a big problem so long as you have some animal haulers/butchers who don't enjoy cats, a cage, and a butcher shop.

I always embark with 2 cats then cage and butcher any kittens and the cat population never really gets out of control.

The catplosion only happens when your cats "adopt" dwarfs. Because you can't control whether or not they do so, and you can't butcher them after that. Then they breed, and if you don't butcher the kittens quickly (like, say, if you miss the notice) they might adopt dwarves too.

Unlike a dogplosion, which simply requires *more* slaugterhouses and butchers be built, until you're finally slaughtering them faster than they're breeding, a catplosion can become unstoppable if they're adopting dwarves faster than you're butchering them.

Yeah, I always take dogs in preference to cats.  Training them takes almost no time or effort, and they can fend off kobold thieves and a lot of nasty wildlife.  They breed fairly quickly too, so you can get a nice standing army of war dogs.

I mainly bring a cat to kill off the vermin in the foodstores that (presumably) accelerates the food turning rotten. Even if vermins don't cause food to go rotten, it is so much more aesthetically pleasing to not have 20 rats and lizards and such roaming about.

It's irritating when vermin hunters seek out and destroy turtles. They may technically be vermin, but I need them, dammit.

I agree with Urist. Steampunk is like Darth Vader winning Holland's Next Top Model. It would be awesome but not something I'd like in this game.
Unfortunately dying involves the amputation of the entire body from the dwarf.

Pfft, just use a dwarf with trapping activated, a cage and at least 2 animal traps. That'll clean out vermin really quick and the vermin you stockpile in the cage double as extra food. (Dwarves will eat caught vermin with no qualms.)
