Artificial lake fishing
« on: August 07, 2009, 07:45:24 am »

Hi,
I made small artificial lake in my fortress with water from underground river. I've read the article about fishing on wiki and I have several questions.

Will my dwarves catch something even if the lake is not connected to river?
Can my dwarves fish so much they will destroy the fish population in my cistern?
Can this population be restored by changing water?

Thank you.

1.)  Yes.
2.)  Yes.
3.)  I... don't think so.

I think the game only looks at fished areas as river/swamp/lake/ocean in a given direction.  So, for instance, when "There is nothing to catch in the Eastern Swamps," there's nothing to catch in ANY of the Eastern Swamps, until the Eastern Swamp population is restored - that is, it's not about a specific cistern or pond, it's "All the ponds in this part of the map."

But I might be wrong.

Yes, the fish you can catch are the vermin fish, which spawn in their biomes, and are not hindered by walls and floors, they teleport around, so they will be in the water there.

Yes, you can overfish it, and deplete the fish population in a water body, it will slowly recover though..Very slowly.

No, adding new water won't help as the fish dwarves catch are the vermin fish, which will spawn in their water regardless of where the water comes from.

What kind of statues are your masons making, that you think they have "maximum exposure"?
(Full frontal ones, apparently.  With very short beards.)

Once again thank you for answers.

I seems I have already depleted resources in that area, so I will leave it there and wait.

To clarify, once the fish run out, you'll have to wait until the next season for them to come back. And once you've done this for enough seasons, they will never come back.

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

I depleted the wild purring maggots at my bottomliss pit, and they never came back.  I guess its possible I inadverntently depleted them several respawns by not watching, but I'm pretty sure the only time they dropped to 0 was when I was never able to catch one again.
