Dwarf Heaven, Framerate Hell

So I lucked out in world-gen.
I managed to find a 3x3 area with no aquifer, reasonably wooded, sand, a river, a chasm, an underground river, a magma pipe and HFS. Only things I haven't found yet are flux and bauxite.
I'm playing the Mac 40d13 version on a 2008 MacBook (2.4GHz Core 2 Duo).
I've set a population cap of 100, and my current population including babies and children is at 107.

Things were a little slow, but still playable, until I hit HFS.
Now its ridiculously slow, and what I want to know is whether killing everything that comes out of HFS will bump the speed back up.
I have a reasonable military: 8 melee champions in plate mail, all legendary wrestlers now concentrating on hammers, plus 8 marksdwarves, not so legendary.
I figure I build a moat, re-breach HFS, raise the bridge and let the marksdwarves do their thang.
I'm not going to try collapsing a mountain on the HFS again, as last time I did that, every time I tried to re-breach, DF crashed :E

So 3 questions:
1: Will this plan work?
2: Do bolts melt before hitting Spirits of Fire?
3: Do Spirits of Fire fling fireballs?

That [Magma] is a bit deep down there, don't you think?
You really aren't thinking like a dwarf.

If you think it is down too far, you move it up until it reaches an acceptable elevation.

Yea, unfortunate side effect of breaching HFS: even walled up, they continually try to path out and kills your FPS. (Or something like that. Walled HFS kills FPS.)

Try the anvil method: Use a cave in to crush the HFS.

Then create a pathway away from the HFS (you'll have to sacrifice a dwarf or two) and somehow create a cavein without getting your miners to cancel spam or killed by HFS.

Unless it's collapsing the mountain on the

2 things may be causing your problems, first, the pathing from the fun stuff trying to get out.

Secondly, if you're (un)lucky, you got the flying fire variety, and with temperature turned on, your computer may be having trouble keeping track of the constantly changing temperatures of the area, as they can fly, and have the highest(unmodded) temperature in the game.

The solution to your problems is just to take out the demons, I think that after several large groups they will stop coming, but if not, and you're not going to cave-in the place, you may be able to block the pits off by flooring over them, or making obsidian on the spot where the pits are.

What kind of statues are your masons making, that you think they have "maximum exposure"?
(Full frontal ones, apparently.  With very short beards.)

Bastards.
I've only lost 3 marksdwarves and 3 melee dwarves so far; the gits flew straight over my fortifications.
Interestingly however, my melee champions managed to kill some without catching fire.

Things are still a bit sluggish however, so I think there's more to come :E

Yes, keep your military ready, there will be more soon.

In general, champion military dwarves should have little problems with them(Provided they have enough dwarves, and there's , except for champion wrestlers, it's not such a good idea to wrestle something that is made of fire.

As long as they die before the dwarves suffer injuries from the heat it should be fine, but I suggest that if one of the bearded fellows catches fire, have a shower/forced bath nearby to put him in so he won't burn to death.
