Floors / smoothed floors

Was wanting to know if there was any advantages to smoothing floors or constructing floors (for soil layer hallways etc) besides the $$$* bonus and covering up stairways. (Have heard you can use floors to make a ceiling for indoor areas outside?)


Common sense says that dwarves would be able to move stuff faster but I havent really noticed a change. Ive been smoothing the stone in my barracks right away and that seems to help with preventing injuries but not sure if it isnt just a coincidence.

Smoothing natural floors does not grant any real bonuses aside from increasing the value of the room (and allowing the floor to be engraved).

Constructed floors can indeed cover up down stairways and be used as the ceiling for outdoor buildings, but remember that you cannot engrave them.

I always replace soil walls/floors with block constructions just because it looks nicer. Graphics-wise (using Mike Mayday) they look identical to smoothed rock, which is nice. You can't smooth soil. Mechanically, the dwarves can get happy thoughts from valuable rooms, which increases productivity.

Also note that constructions made of stone are rough while block constructions are not (and I believe are higher value).

Yup, smooth/constructed floors are mainly for the aesthetics and for building stuff of course. Besides the increased room values they also lessen the mood penalty dorfs get from falling to sleep on the spot without a bed. Make sure to always smooth the floors in your barracks, since dwarfs that cannot find any free beds will fall as sleep on the barracks' floor.
Smooth floors don't affect the movement speed of dorfs or anyone else for that matter. In the 2D version smooth floors were necessary for the trade caravan wagons, but not anymore.

Constructed (and paved?) floor also prevents tree growth, so they can be used to keep channels clear.

To clarify, roads will prevent tree growth, but any muddy floor allows growth unless blocked. Smoothing the floors over or building constructed floors that will get muddied will not block the growth of trees(And towercaps)
That is, for towercaps, regular trees will never grow on anything other then soil, so constructed floors will block those just as much as a road.(At least in their regular unmuddied state, I do not know for sure what happens to muddy outdoor constructed floor)

What kind of statues are your masons making, that you think they have "maximum exposure"?
(Full frontal ones, apparently.  With very short beards.)

That's not entirely sure, I have never seen it happen, and would doubt it.

But I also know no proof either way, so this would call for an experiment, or the knowledge of someone that tried.

-most my knowledge is about towercaps, not those fancy aboveground trees that need some shining ball from the sky.

trees are most likely limited to biome. Just because you muddy some rock on a mountainside doesn't mean trees will start growing.

No, aboveground you need to be in a biome that supports vegetation, and I think that also means soil is the top layer.

I know I've muddied vast areas of mountain biome and all I've had to show for it was... mud.

One thing I haven't explicitly tested is if you do the following:

  • Discover an underground river, enabling tower caps
  • Dig out and clear a rock area one z-level below the surface
  • Muddy this area, wait for some TCs to sprout
  • Channel away the roof of this TC farm
  • Get aboveground TC forest?!?!?

I am building a castle, an above ground keep with four walls and towers. I was wondering if constructed floors added any material value to rooms? I built a silver room for my mayor and it does not seem to be any more special then the rough walled room I made for the Sheriff. It makes the nobles that much more annoying.

Yes, it does, but room value has cutpoints, so if it's only a few hundred more db's in value, it probably didn't make any diff. 

Silver is value 10, which is nice but not a bankbreaker - I forget the math, probably somewhere around 75/tile or so.  One *exceptioinal native aluminum statue* is worth many thousand - a couple of those and you'll see the diff.

 That would work. You dont actually need to muddy the ground if its soil. You can create a farm plot and then destroy it, this will leave land that tower-caps can (slowly) grow on. But I don't know why you'd want to expose the stately tower-cap to the vomit inducing light anyway.

If it's soil, you don't even need to do that. I've got tower-caps growing all around my glass magma smelters, which I built on some soil near a sand block so they'd be close to the necessary materials.
