I have a confession...
« on: August 06, 2009, 12:42:41 pm »

For the last month or so I have been playing with my dwarves modded for:

SPEED:0
NO_EAT
NO_SLEEP
NO_DRINK
NOEXERT
NOEMOTION

I call them my robodwarves.  Am I a horrible person for doing this?  I did spent a lot of time learning to run a fort 'the right way' but I really enjoy the building/mining process better than micromanaging the happiness of my dwarves.  I also HATE dwarves taking breaks and attending parties.

Well there is definitely still fun to be had for sure.  I certainly have no shortage of dwarves on my deceased list  ;D

I am also a cheater...

On my last map, I had no shells at all. None in the cave river (which yielded no lobsters,) none in the brook, and none from the muddy areas my pumping created.  Nearly all my moods needed shells, so went and fiddled with the reactions whenever I wanted one.  I would have dealt with it by letting them die, but all my important dwarfs kept getting moods, one after another.

(However, my current map is letting me fish turtles out of the aquifer in the frozentundra...so I don't feel too bad about it  ::))

I'm a cheater.  I hate dealing with aquifers, and I'm currently playing on a world designed to constantly be frozen.  So I make a well-type area that has a single aquifer stone to product water for us.

And any time someone gets a mood that uses wood, I use Dwarf Companion to switch what materials they want.

And I used Speed: 1 when building massive constructions, dumping and smoothing operations.

I too have cheated somewhat. I gave my dogs dragon breath and fire immune so that I would essentially be invulnerable to enemy attacks or attacks by anything at all.
Now that sounds interesting. Is it possible to give only wardogs dragon breath? I've never modded anything (unless you count installing the Orc mod), so my knowledge on this is very limited

No, it can't be only for war dogs.  They're not a separate unit from the regular dogs.

Giving dogs Dragonfire would give it to regular, hunting, and war dogs.

As long as you don't glorify your achievements under the guise of accomplishing them in vanilla, there's no such thing as cheating.

I have a confession... I modded in Magmatite, a mysterious metal refined from three bars of iron which shares the unique properties of HFS, letting it be used to make almost anything. Mostly for use in forging magma-safe mechanisms.

I also have a folder where goblins have been deleted. I got tired of getting pissant little wussy raids that run away after the initial apocalyptic implosion of the group leader instead of fifty-orc murder bands.

This is a Dwarven corpse. All craftsdwarfship is of the highest quality. It is encircled with bands of pathetic and menaces with spikes of fail.

Nice guys...I don't really confess to anything because I only mod the game to make it more difficult, not easy, but to each their own. Dwarf fortress is brilliant because there is so much to be had that you can cut out the entire emotion and relationship part and still have tons to do. (I do enjoy that part though)

I confess that I'm considering modding the game to have an easier way of coping with the aftermath of goblin sieges, by butchering the bodies and modding out their fat and meat.

I also confess to killing dwarves through not thinking things through, checking before I mine, and savescumming when things become unrecoverable.

Also to wishing I had never found that magnetite cluster with the lignite vein next to it, because scrabbling for every last scrap of iron or refined coal was actually challenging.

Elves do it in trees. Humans do it in wooden structures. Dwarves? Dwarves do it underground. With magma.

Savescumming I can proudly say I am not guilty of, although that's probably because my very favourite thing in the game is to watch a mature fort die in a terrible way. Watching the fortress guard attempt to enforce justice as the world collapses around them is like a badass apocalpyptic movie. If I lose a young fort, I just shrug it off as I didn't lose that much time.

I'm what I would call a purpose-driven cheater.

Basically, my project is an example. No cave in's so I can actually build the damn thing, as well as have it levitate without any "anchors" aweigh.

Savescumming mostly for screencaps (map pics both DFFD and 3D imagers), or a serious botch that cripples a project. As well as experimenting with something (like the boiler, for example).

I'm looking into modding, so I can see just how terrible/fying my Carippos really are. As well as a handful of other ideas.

I guess you can say I don't cheat unless I get bored, or beat a game previously. Which seems impossible in DF. Unless I seriously fail have fun with the Orc Mod. Then again, I would probably cheat out of frustration.

I just used dtil to fill up every 6/7 tile of magma in my magma forge cistern to 7/7 in an effort to regain some fps. It worked, too! 15-20 jumped to 30 or so.

Of course, since I have a really huge one, it took me 15 mins of patient clicking and typing. Ow.
