Positive use for cats: Found
« on: August 06, 2009, 12:29:40 pm »

Other than ballista target practice, distracting attackers, and +cat biscuits+, I have found a good use for cats. The entrance to my fort is a long tunnel. The cats go in and out of it in groups to hunt vermin on the surface. By doing this, they have succesfully seen 6 thiefs, 4 snatchers, and 1 ambush.

Yikes, the Orcs have a nasty language.  Traditional foreplay would be right out for them; how would they ever "say my name" for one another?  No wonder Ocrs are always so bloodthirsty and violent, they're getting sub-par action.

People are know to tie cats in random areas on the surface for this very reason.

I always embark with 2 cats and at the very least a couple pigtail thread to quickly make into ropes in order to station a kitty at my door.  I leave the male running about to catch vermin and any kittens that arrive get either tossed in a cage or tied out at various spots where they can be useful.

Just try it! Its not like you die IRL if Urist McMiner falls into magma.

Two cats? You're just asking for catsplosion. I only ever take one pest eater.

I agree with Urist. Steampunk is like Darth Vader winning Holland's Next Top Model. It would be awesome but not something I'd like in this game.
Unfortunately dying involves the amputation of the entire body from the dwarf.

I guard my entrance with chained up war dogs, not cats. Unlike cats, war dogs can do some decent damage before they get killed, and should be plentiful if immigrants managed to bring a breeding pair.

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

Another positive use for cats is the 'comforted by pet' happy thought in dwarves about to tantrum.

The cats are just the scouts, I have wardogs and some bears behind the drawbridge incase anybody sneaks past. The pattern I have them in lined up with the walls also prevents any archers from getting them 100% and limits the amount of melee enemies that can reach them:
XX  X  XX
X  X  X  X
XXDXDXX
XBXBXBX

X=wall
D=war dog
B=bear

What? That isn't enough for you? Those are plenty of good uses  ;)

I actually used trained war werewolves for this purpose. I currently have 4 war werewolves, 2 war giant ice scorpions, and 3 war ice trolls guarding my fortress entrance and trade depot.

(I am playing the dark dwarves mod)

Cats do decent damage(1-6 bite like dogs but it's probably a bug)

War werewolves do more.

I've seen a cat kill a kobold once. The kobold decided to fight the cat, and the cat ripped enough chunks out of him that he bled to death.

Darkdwarves modders, I use the combined mod and I field fel wargs. They're like dogs, but they won't die when the magma uglies come knocking. seeing fireballs shot acros the screen like some horrendous game of paintball is very fun.
