Gem Encrusted Weapons
« on: August 05, 2009, 08:34:11 pm »

Now, this may be a rather stupid question, but is there anyway, aside from artifacts, to encrust armour and weapons with gems? Are they counted as finished goods in the Jewlers Workshop? Or have I missed something obvious

It will make them more expensive. And prettier, so dwarves will like them more.
Also I like my champions to walk around in shining armor full of gems.

That just completely sidestepped the question. hahah
Anyway, I don't know, Cow, but I would sure like to know.

Unless there's something I myself am missing with jewel encrusted weaponry, weapons and armor don't count as finished goods, and can't be decorated with gems.

The most you can do is decorate them with bone, I think.

Oh wait, I missed the question. I believe you should just encrust weapons. I'll check it.
If it's not on the workshop list, try the manager. And no, they are not considered to be finished goods.

Impossible.
Your choices are:

Furniture
Finished goods
Ammunition

I believe the term is "Damn". Ah well, bone, shell and metal it is.

Haha, I just got the most kickass idea ever. Instead of having a gem-encrustred metal sword, you should have a metal-studden gem sword! I wonder if you can get one from a strange mood... some odd variant of an obsidian sword?

"This is a diamond shortsword. It is studded with adamantium and menaces with spikes of adamantium"

If it did in fact function like an obsidian sword, then it would do as much damage as a steel sword anyway.

Hmmmm... there IS armor under "finished goods" stockpile settings. And I play around with that a lot, in my automated waste disposal stockpile.

Try it, dont designate ANY armor stockpile, but just a finished good pile with all the armor types turned on: every piece of armor, whether usable or unusable will turn up there. DOn't know if that matters for that question, but at least it's a clue.

I got 10 dwarfbucks here that say you can encrust armor. (via "encrust finished goods")

The "armor" you see under Finished Goods only includes clothing made from leather and cloth - actual armor goes solely to Armor stockpiles.

It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.

This is probably easy to "fix" by modding.

However, you can stud them with metal. Just put an armor/weapons stockpile next to the forge (with settings for whatever types and quality levels you want to stud) and give the 'stud items with X' jobs in the workshop. I frequently end up with armor and weapons that are banded or spiked with metal this way.

Do upgraded weapons and armor do more damage, as if they were naturally masterwork?
