I can fill up my planned 300x300 wood stockpile room and never need wood again

You'll be surprised how quickly it depletes if you're using charcoal in lieu of magma.

That's assuming, of course, you're like me and use metal for stuff you can make out of stone, and have a heavy glass industry as well.

Oh, gawdz - glass industries suck down wood like a summer frat party sucks down beer. Esp if you're "training" your glassmakers.

Steel is bad enough, even without training - 2 wood/steel bar created, plus more for the forging itself.  Ouch.

(And that assumes you have iron ore - if you're remelting goblinite, it's off the charts.)

Well im in heavily forested area. Whats wrong with orange text? Is there some inside forum joke about orange text I dont know about?

Not sure what being in a heavily-forested area has to do with underground rivers.

The reason orange text is annoying is because people use colored text when they need to make something stand out for some reason. Doing this to every post of yours sort of confuses this concept.

The orange is so nice to look at, so easy on my eyes.

*Gasp*, i ve been infected!

Shrubs and trees use the same counter for how many plants can grow in an area I think, so yes, removing the bushes helps the trees grow.

Nothing with speed, only with quantity.

Awesome, so if I walled in 4 or 5 trees in a 20x20 area, then removed all the plants, eventually each tile would be a tree?
Trees can't grow side-by-side, at least it's a common myth.
Also make sure your dwarves don't trample your tree saplings.

I hear that the 'muddy' tag helps improve tree growth. Hence, flooding the map with magma water while the elves are on the map is a good thing.

Hey, since you can grow trees and stuff on a muddy constructed floor, and underground tiles stay exposed to light forever (despite having a new ceiling), is it possible to have trees growing on 3 or 4 z-levels underground? could I have layers and layers of tree growing grassland perfect for growing trees out of the way of sunlight? I would need loads of floors to cover up my newly channeled stuff, but is it doable?

I agree with Urist. Steampunk is like Darth Vader winning Holland's Next Top Model. It would be awesome but not something I'd like in this game.

IIRC, trees won't sprout on tiles that are only a floor thick.

I'll make them two floors thick then. I can always channel it out and then build blocks to provide a tree friendly floor. can I?

It's an interesting idea. You mean that you would build walls to create layers which trees *may* grow on? I don't think that will fool the game because walls are a construction, but I would like to see it tried.

Well, I heard someone had a plan for making a self-sufficient floating fortress, which was supposed to include an area on top for growing trees/wood on.

If it worked for him, then trees may grow on constructions, sadly, I do not know if it worked.

Interesting to know if it would work.

How do you make it float?

Turn cave-ins off, there's an option for it in the init file.

You will still need to first build a support, and then later on remove it for something to actually float, even with cave-ins turned off you can't build unsupported things.
