Deforestation
« on: August 05, 2009, 03:47:54 pm »

Due to the smithy council yelling all the time for more charcoal I have begun my campaign against the forest! Many squirrels were harmed!

My question is, if I have my dwarfs cut down every tree on my map, so I can fill up my planned 300x300 wood stockpile room and never need wood again, will trees stop growing since they were all cut down? I recently have only cut a quarter of my map after I had sectioned it into 4 areas, cutters just cut down the last few so I dont know if more trees are growing or not.

Also was wanting to know how I grow trees underground? I know how to make large rooms where they can be grown with the pumping and all that, but do I get seeds from elves or something?

Trees don't need other trees to grow. Tbh there are probably saplings in the ground already. You don't need to worry about them dying out.

Underground trees are tower-caps. They will only grow after you have discovered (received a message along the lines of "You have found an Underground River") either an underground pool or river. You don't need anything else, apart from a fair bit of time (1.5 years or so) once you see saplings start to grow then you know you are cooking with charcoal. I like to remove the other bushes that grow to keep the area clear for trees, I don't know if that actually encourages them but I think it looks better.

By "I know how to make large rooms where they can be grown" I assume you mean that you know they will grow on tiles which have the word "muddy" or "muddied" at the start of their name.

Oh good, well ill start cutting right away, so excited! I cant wait to see that huge room filled wall to wall with logs.

Underground river? Well crap, would an underground river be near a surface river? because I have one of those.

Aye.

You can check back through your anouncement log to see if you had ever exposed a cave or anything. The announcement should be in blue. Otherwise you better use reveal2.exe (or reveal.exe if you have XP) to see if you have one, otherwise theres just no point in trying and you'd be better walling off large areas around your mine entrance.

If you do reveal, make sure you save before you do it and then note down the location of the feature (on a piece of paper, not in game) then re-load and "discover" it legitimately. Otherwise you won't get that message, which is what tower-caps look for.

Underground rivers are one of the mountain-only special features, and aren't related to other water features at all, so yeah, odds are you don't have one, and you DEFINITELY don't if you don't have any mountain biome terrain.

Also: orange text!?

It may also be a good idea to send someone out to gather the plants. This is because if you remove the trees but not the plants, the plants will eventually grow over most of the map, stopping more trees growing. If you don't need the seeds from the plants, send someone with no skill in plan gathering, who are expendable in case they find an ambush.

Im positive I have not exposed a cave or anything, only two years into the fort so remember most of the announcements.

Well im in heavily forested area. Whats wrong with orange text? Is there some inside forum joke about orange text I dont know about?

If I remove all the plants will that increase the amount of trees grown?

Shrubs and trees use the same counter for how many plants can grow in an area I think, so yes, removing the bushes helps the trees grow.

Nothing with speed, only with quantity.

Awesome, so if I walled in 4 or 5 trees in a 20x20 area, then removed all the plants, eventually each tile would be a tree?

The areas are 48x48, but I don't think every tile can become a tree. It can't hurt to try though. There is probably a maximum number that is different for each biome.

That sounds right to me. I think he said the area was "Heavily Forested", those places have become almost solid with trees in some of my games.

more plants would grow as well, but if you removed them eventually there would be a solid block of trees.

Not sure what being in a heavily-forested area has to do with underground rivers.

The reason orange text is annoying is because people use colored text when they need to make something stand out for some reason. Doing this to every post of yours sort of confuses this concept.

Aha, a problem that can be solved by logic! A heavily forested biome cannot be a mountain biome, only a mountain biome can contain an Underground River.

True. However, you can embark on more than one biome, and in fact have to if one of them is a mountain.
