Dumping preferences
« on: August 05, 2009, 03:24:16 pm »

Ok, so I've got a number of dumps set (and active, and accessible). How is the specific dump for a given task chosen? My dwarves are not choosing the closest (on any axis) dump, and prefer to only use one specific one.

Are your dumps actually pits? As in a channel in the ground. I had a problem like this because I was just designating 1x1 tiles as dumps, only my first one was next to a massive pit, so the dwarfs were only dumping into that one. The problem cleared up when I dug 1x1 channels and put a dump zone adjacent to them.

Yep, pits for sure. Not even ponds :P

I've got a vertical stack of aligned pits (with associated dumps) over magma. The dwarves almost only ever use the bottom level, even when dumping stuff is assigned next to the top.

It may just be the last one assigned.

That's interesting. I think the problem you are encountering is to do with the fact that dumping thinks about where the item is going to land, so maybe each magma tile can only be associated with one dump zone tile. Try not having the pits aligned.

I'd like to know the answer to this if there is one.

I currently micro-manage which dump is active depending on the job. I have about 4 garbage zones total and I try to keep only one active at a time.
