Blue Emu absolutely detests Giant Cave Spiders.
« on: August 05, 2009, 05:54:16 am »

How do I stop my Dwarves from committing suicide by running wildly across the map to collect Spider webs whose owners really don't want to part with them?

According to the Wiki, Dwarves will only collect webs if Weaving is enabled and an accessible Loom exists.

This is NOT true, in my experience. I had my Expedition Leader eaten by a Giant Cave Spider, and one of my Farmers killed by the inhabitants of a Cave (while trying to collect normal Cave Spider webs).

Is there anything that I can do to disable the task completely?

Go to the
  • rders screen.

Open the [W]orkshops section.

Turn off auto collect webs.

Thank you! You have just saved several virtual lives... for a while, anyway.

Who doesn't detest/fear/whatever the GCS's.

I've never actually run into a live Giant Cave Spider myself, only encountered the remnants of their webs.

GCSs are awesome. If I had any modding ability, I'd add GCS as a civ. Imagine the fun of armored GCSs with wrestling ranks and ability modifiers swarming towards your entrance.

Considering the giant cave spider had latched onto her head, i'd say shes a contender for the most badass/luckiest person ever.

I don't see how "your experience" contradicts the wiki.

You had to have a loom to collect the webs, you had to have "weaving" enabled on those who went to do the collecting.  What's your beef?

(I think you also have to have a stockpile for the thread, but I could be wrong on that.)

I had a legendary die from a cave spider wearing full adamantine armor and you had a farmer kill it. :'(

Along these lines does having pieces of web in various places (especially places you've hollowed out yourself) automatically mean GCS or is it possible they're just regular cave spider webs or even harmless cobwebs.

Could be normal Cave Spider webs. Check them with k, that might tell you.

Though if you'd dug the area out yourself, chances are it's not a GCS, I'd say.

Not to mention that the stocks screen actually tells you if there are GCS webs present.

You can actually find hidden chasms and bottomless pits this way and with the corpses/skeletons/skulls of cave critters that die of old age.

Speaking of chasms, I've only seen the bits of GCS web in bottomless pits.

I had no Loom. Weaving was not enabled on the Dwarf that got killed (he was my Expedition Leader... Mechanic, Animal Training and Social Skills). I did have a Cloth/Thread stockpile.

This happened very early in the game, before I had received any immigrants. The webs (and the GCS itself) were on the surface... the GCS was hunting Mountain Goats.

Make sure that collecting refuse from outside is turned off, as vermin die in the webbing, causing dwarves to rush off and try to collect their corpse.
