Capturing live fish
« on: August 05, 2009, 05:30:56 am »

I set a repeating task for catching live fish, there are definitely fish in the river, there are animal traps, a dwarf with the fishing labour, and he absol.utely refuses to catch them live! instead, he fishes normally and deposits them dead in my stockpile! How do I get my dorf to get live fish for my aquarium (which is filled, built and clear glass, by the way)?

IIRC, you must construct the trap in the water and bait it before it'll catch live fish. That's how it worked in the 2D version anyhow. Haven't tried it since then.

I thought the "Catch Fish" job only worked for the vermin-types like moghoppers and turtles?

These answers are undwarven. In truth, the only real way to obtain live fish is to mine for it.

Oh that's true, I'd forgotten. You can find live fish by digging until you hit Adamantium.

Don't forget that you also need to employ magma, somehow!

If you haven't defined a Fishing activity zone, then the Fisherdwarf carrying out your "Catch Live Fish" order won't do a damn thing aside from sit around the trap stockpile - while normal Fishing automatically locates a suitable fishing source, Catch Live Fish requires an activity zone.

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

Also, be warned:

Dwarfs love their sushi still wriggling.

Make sure to forbid the live fish (through the stock screen) once they're in the tank.

there are animal traps, a dwarf with the fishing labour

Does no one see a problem here?

You don't use a trap to go fishing.  You use a trap to go... trapping.  You have the wrong labour enabled.

Edit - Wrongo!
See wiki: "animal trap" (or just "trap" and follow disambiguation link at top)

huh?

Animal Trap + Fishing labor + Catch Live Fish order + Active Fishing Zone, that's what you need.  Also, there need to be fish at that zone.  If you can't designate it as a fishing zone, then there are no fish there.  The fish will come and go too, so you may need to relocate the zone.

Once a dwarf finally accepts the Catch Live Fish job--and it may take a long time for them to get to it--they'll take the trap to the zone and do their fishing routine.  The dwarf will leave the fish on the ground to get eaten, so immediately set it to be placed in an aquarium and forbid it once it's there.

Sorry, Albedo, but this is yet another place where DF doesn't make sense.  I didn't know the answer, so I just tried it.  After quite a while, a dwarf eventually accepted the job...  a dwarf with fishing enabled and trapping (as well as any other fish/animal-related activities) not enabled.  Now that I've tried it, I wish it were attached to the trapping skill (or maybe a completely different skill that would almost never get used, but eh), because you don't want dwarves wasting time fishing when you just want to catch a live fish...

Coulda sworn it was the other way around - bah!

Well, I've always taken the stance that "logic" and DF are like oil and magma - if you mix them, they go BOOM in your face.
