Two of my craft dwarfs just made two artifacts, a prefect gem (4800*..<shrug>) and a iron gauntlet (48,000*...woot!)

Two questions:

1. How do I sell / stockpile artifacts? I heard cpt.duck mention selling artifacts in one of the early videos he made. Both the gem and gauntlet are sitting in the workshops even though I have gem/armor stockpiles being used.

2. I have heard that making an artifact grants legendary status in whatever skill once completed. Was wanting to know if that was still a fact in 40d because my craft dwarfs are the same skill they were before completing artifact.

You can't sell artifacts, even if you could it'd probably cause the dwarf who made it to go insane. you can make special stockpiles to accept Artifact quality items.

                (i spell that right?)
Not if it was a possesion, those are basically useless moods, if it was a fey or otherwise and the dwarf is not legendary, consider it a bug

1. You can't sell artifacts. And maybe someone hasn't got around to hauling them yet.

2. If it was a possession, it doesn't. See the wiki for more info on each type of mood.

So if I cant sell them and my dwarfs cant wear them, whats the point of it?

They give invaders something to steal
Some dwarves can use them, like artifact weapons are really good.
You put them in a nobles room to get them to stfu
They raise the overall value of your fortress significantly
They give a dwarf instant legendary whatever skill.

Who says they can't wear them? It just takes a legendary dwarf, that's all.

Well the gauntlet sure sounds nice, yes.

Do I make a single tile stockpile in the nobles room or something? Or is there a way to manually have a dwarf pick up something and drop it somewhere? Would be handy.

Well my wrestlers are both High-Master Armor so will one of them be able to wear the gauntlet once at legendary?

Don't they have to be champions to wear artifact gauntlets?

Anyway, if you end up with artifact furniture, you can install it in a room normally. Not so sure about gems.

As far as actually getting legendary things into the nobles room, chances are 90% of created artifacts will be useless. Of the remaining 10%, such things as doors, tables, chairs, statues, and other things that can be "built", you would "build" that door/chair/whatever and select that particular artifact. Then the dwarf would build it. The remaining 2% of things that are useful are things like weapons and armor, and as far as forcing a dwarf to use artifact arms and armor... I got nothing.

Yeah, I don't know if it's Legendary Armor User, though. I think they just have to be Champions.

Crafts, like gems and idols, are essentially useless except as super-high-value objects. Store them. Anything else is generally usable and will make the value of a room go up at an absurd rate-sticking an artifact golden cabinet in the room of a baron who likes gold will pretty much make him instantly and orgasmically happy. Making a well with an artifact chain, an artifact bucket, and an adamantine block... Good way to find out the maximum cap on an immigrant wave, is all I'll say.

As to forcing dwarves to use artifact arms and armor...

Well, you could always use the method described in the wiki. Set the dwarf you want to wear/wield the artifact to Unarmed/Clothes levels of weapon and armor. After that forbid everything in the weapons pile except the one you want her to wield, and do the same for a set of armor. Then set the dwarf to whatever weapon you want and the armor level of your desired armor. Voila!

But it's tedious so I've never personally tried it.

Did that to change my squad leader to steel instead of iron armor, will see if he will pick up the artifact gauntlet using same process.

Most "artifacts" are, as stated above, completely useless.  You can't trade them, you can't use them, and they generally suck.  That's because - at least by default - most artifacts will  be made in your Crafts workshop.  This leads to various wooden crafts which are useless enough without wasting a strange mood.

Recently, however, I had a gem cutter go into a strange mood.  He locked himself in his jeweler's workshop, gathered up a number of gems and came out with a named, perfect gem that found its way into my "Finished Goods" stockpile.  I thought I might try searching for its name in the trading screen, but a Rhesus Macaque stole it before I had a chance.

The creator of said gem didn't seem to care.  I specifically looked for some kind of bad thought from it, but it never showed up.  I'm sure there will be engravings about it later, though.   ;D

As for the skill changes, it is unfortunate that possession is ALSO apparently the most common form of Strange Mood.  At least it is for me.  And last I checked nobody knows if there are any conditions for specific moods (well... except the macabre mood, which requires an unhappy dwarf going into a mood), or what those conditions might be (if they exist).

So usually... I end up with a bunch of legendary wooden or stone crafts and not even a legendary woodcrafter or stonecrafter to show for it.   :-\
