Sieges seem to stop?
« on: August 04, 2009, 03:42:10 pm »

While playing the game I end up encountering goblin ambush squads too early to handle, so I just use a third party program to drop them in lava or a chasm or off a cliff or throw them into a lake, which may be the problem but I have noticed that it seems that after some time goblin sieges and ambush squads just seem to stop. Has anyone else had this problem?

Well, did you kill the goblin rulers?

When that happens, no more gobbos (from what I remember)

Hmm... That is a possibility, do they ever come with a siege or squad? And if so, how would I go about subduing them without killing them? If I cage them do I still get to experience sieges and ambush squads? It's not like I want them to stop ENTIRELY, I would just like to be adequately prepared before facing 6 ambush squads each possessing 10 goblins.

I've found they do that, but then suddenly come back with a venegance, sieging 3-4 times in a single year and cutting off most of the caravans.

When your fortress is wealthy enough and has repelled a load of sieges, the local leaders will show up, and eventually the goblin king (who will sometimes be a dwarf, apparently). As far as I remember they do retreat when wounded or if you pulverize their forces, but it's really hard to prevent the local leaders from dying.

Also they tend to be Elite Marksgoblins/Swordmasters/Hammerlords, so if you intentionally allow them to survive, you're risking losing a load of dwarves (at least until you have champions).

What if I put them in a cage or lock them in a jail? Would there still be sieges and ambush squads then?

I'm not sure about that. Usually by the time the local leaders start attacking they fetch up against a wall of crossbow bolts.

You could experiment with caging, maybe it'll work. Alternately, once you have a leader caged, build his cage far away from your fort and release him so he can go back to his goblins and lead them again.

Well, I've noticed that if you consistently wipe out a few sets of sieges/ambushes, the attacks stop for 1-2 years before picking back up.

I chalk it up to them having to replenish themselves after the losses, but I'm not certain that's anything to do with IG mechanics.

In the traditional sense of the word?  No, he's been dissolved in magma.

Currently, the sieges are spawned specially, apart from the local leaders.

In future releases, sieges and ambushers will deplete the local population of goblins.
