Thank You Toady! Everything that I could of asked for. I was worried when I got to a computer (hotel office) and checked the forums, only to see that VN was gone. I worriedly checked the date (isn't it still the the 11th?!). I think that it being hidden is a good solution for now.

*sighs*

I managed to save the epic post by Viaolis.
Yes. The Charter. Its a great piece of history. The declaration of independence started the end of VN
Then as a finisher we have yuri, anti-yuri, the war between the holy chin and ministry. I might print it and tape it to a wall or something. That post was pure epicness.

The rest is pure trash

Rooster? YOU STILL LIVE?
REALLY?

I am currently one of the oldest (by joining date) members here. Well over 2 years (3 kinda). Yet I don't have many posts. I just post EVEN less now that VN was destroyed. It was a fun ride. those last moments of crazyness. Now there are still some things that might be worth saving from VN but I'm not entirely sure.

Well, VN is still here, just hidden, currently.  For some reason I'm on the list of members who can still view it, even though I wasn't even around in its time.

So can I.

Toady mentioned that everyone who posted in this thread can see VN, because presumably if they posted in this thread they want to do something about it.

Can I do anything to help?

Find something that isn't crap and suggest moving it to an appropriate forum. And damn, where the hell is that one thread where we were all hard-boiled private eyes and mobsters?!

I clearly remember PTTG?? saying a quote worthy statement about me in VN, but I can't find it anywhere.

Here, I found it for you.  I don't get what you're all so broken up about, it's not even that long.

It has the sheer awesomeness of WorkerDrone unilaterally deciding to introduce me as a fedora wearing cyborg, and me, for the first time reading the thread, happening by it, and being the next one to post.

Supposedly, there was more of it here.  Not that I understand any of it.

What needs to be done is that someone needs to write a script that browse the forum and download everything. I can contribute with bandwidth, CPU, storage space etc. but I don't know enoughht to write a script myself, nor do I have extreme amounts of time.
The scipt dosnt need to get it in any easily readable format or anything, just the .html files of the pages shuld be enought, just so the actual information is saved and I can come back to it in a few years when I have lerned to script/have enought time to do it by hand.

Best if you can get it to split the user ID/name and post text/title, thread ID, and compare the time/date to the one at the top of the page...

Better, quote the post to get the code rather than the HTML.

How can I learn to script?

I think I should be able to write such a program if I knew how...

Edit: In locked threads, it should copy from the post-top HR to the "IP logged" for the text...

Edit again(Oops, also hit reply instead of edit the first time)

It seems there is no quote button.

So it must be a HTML-copy that could be converted back after downloading.

Well, getting it in a nicely readable format would be better of coarse, but if such a script is significantly harder to write, (or might miss some data,) getting the HTML first might be a good idea, because then we no longer have to fear completely losing the data.

I just need to know how to get a script to read the web page.

Then I could get formatting working.

I don't have the bandwidth to actually use it, but if I can get it to read a test thread, and identify all on a page, and the other pages, theoretically it should all work. Then I could give the script to someone with more bandwidth/space/time, and they could get the dump.

Pre-post-Edit: It seems likely that javascript can do it.
Dong some reading on it, might have a page that reads a page. Odd, but I guess workable.
