Magma causes fire. Fire is a pretty fun thing.

The dwarves seem to think so too. When they catch on fire they get so overjoyed that they run around the fort sharing it with everyone.

haha =)   well I have never even seen magma yet, not sure what biomes magma is usually in but I always make my forts in warm, woodlands next to rivers. Does magma count as coal? 'Really' hate having to make coal to make bars then make more coal to make items.

Got a plan to make a magma arena once I figure out how to handle magma. Have a 4x4 pillar with two bridges that retract leaving a dwarf wrestler and a goblin to fight to the death, pillar being surronded by a magma pit.


A current will push it, if you have a water source you could push them all to somewhere out of the
way. Ideally a chasm/pit.

Failing that, if you have periodic rhesus macaque raids, you could try trapping some of them, releasing them in your barracks and hoping they grab some of the stuff letting them escape with it.

Will try that once some more of them show up, one of them took a steel bolt out of my depot and I had my wrestlers chase em down and kill em all.

Try giving your wrestlers shields. That seems to keep them from throwing eachothers clothes all over the barracks.  ;)

Thanks, just got two wooden shields from the hippie elves so will try that.

It's not that magma counts as coal, but rather that there are special versions of coal-operated buildings that can use the heat from the magma to avoid using fuel. You still need proper coal for creating steel, but it's obviously in much smaller quantities, and all other (AFAIK, I don't think I'm forgetting any other) processes don't need any in a magma smelter/forge/quiln.

I can't believe I never thought of this before:

Go into your military screen and change your champions back to clothing level armor. They'll drop their armor and go pick up their clothes in the barracks to dress themselves. When you set them back to their full armor they'll still wear everything except for socks and shoes. And when they do drop the socks/shoes, they'll drop them where they pick up their armor, so you can set an armor stockpile somewhere out of the way and wait for the armor to be moved before letting them put it back on.

I have one addendum to this piece of advice: be sure to remove the barracks, otherwise your champions will just spar instead of picking up their equipment.

pretty sure there is no magma on my map, and never used a pump before. seriously, whats with everyones obsession with magma?

I think it stems from the fact magma allows much faster, easier and cheaper production of both metal and glass. Many players don't bother with metalsmithing or glassmaking at all if magma is not available, myself included. Too much micromanagement. Soon players started using it offensively as a weapon, and eventually players figured out they could solve virtually any problem with magma, though I'm one of the few who limits it to economical uses

I actually completely drained a magma pipe into a bottomless pit for the purpose of making it uniform (square) on all sides so I could use it for an obsidian farm :D

No idea if this is true or not, but dwarves always store things in owned chests if they're available. So one solution might be to assign each military dwarf a two square room, containing a bed and a container for the clothes ( I can't remember if it's a container or a cabinet you need though)

This way they should store any unworn pieces of clothing in their rooms, thus clearing space. And it's slightly less destructive than magma.

I think they store things in coffers and cabinets differently depending on the item, but either way its an extremely low priority job dependent on the dwarf's personality IIRC. I had a mayor who insisted on putting EVERYTHING away but I had wrestlers who did or didn't with little rhyme or reason.

Yeah, for clothing its cabinets. But even without cabinets, for non-military dwarves, when they acquire a new shoe (for example) they'll drop their old shoe, then almost immediately be assigned the "store owned item" job, and they'll take the old shoe to their room. If they have a cabinet it'll get put in there, otherwise it'll just be left on the floor.

For military dwarves, I'm unsure if they can take on the "store owned item" job. I've certainly never seen them do it. I think it may be treated the same as hauling and become disabled upon being drafted. That's my theory, anyway.

Build an atom-smashing bridge on one side of the room so that it raises toward a wall of the room, raise it (so that it forms a "wall", then build another bridge on the REST of the room, and the clothes should be moved back under the non-wall part of the other bridge, ready to be smashed.  Prevent dwarves from being able to move through the entrance(s) to the room while clothing is being moved so the second bridge can be built for best results.

If this has to do with jobs, could you not just give the wrestlers the hauling labor using Dwarf Manager?

The problem is that putting away clothing and other items isn't a 'job' it is something the dwarves only consider between jobs. Much like 'taking a break'. From what I've seen it is heavily dependent on the dwarf's personality whether or not he will decide to go take a break or do some useful cleaning.

I build a bridge BEFORE I assign barracks. It works well, except for a single time when a MISCHIEVIOUS bastard somehow managed to pull the lever near barracks. Now I build this lever deep in the fortress at the end of a long passageway (so sneaking bastards have no reason to go there).
