Metalmen!
« on: August 03, 2009, 12:20:50 pm »

Heh, well I just got the idea to make a fortress using mostly metal(stone is acceptable, but wood is forbidden). This, of course, means that barrels and beds will need to be made from metal, early in the game, likely before access to magma. Gathering from the outside world at all is forbidden, including plants or hunting, so I'm considering embarking in either a really hot or cold area since I won't be needing outside stuff anyway. Underground river will be a requirement, though if I find one tower-caps will still be forbidden, but the water and fish will be usable. Only thing I'm wondering is how to get started...

How will you make beds? Those can't be made of metal without a modded reaction. The same goes for water/windmills and axles.

Oh really? I thought you could make metal beds, just not stone ones...

I just wasn't going to use those.

I knew that, just not about the metal. Why is wood the only material... I'm sure nobles would love to have metal beds, especially gold or adamantine ones.

Any idea how to mod the game to allow the metal beds? Because I really want to go through wiht this idea.

Unless you find lignite or bituminous coal, you can't make steel, and are stuck with

Why would you be stuck with Gentlemen?  ;)

Yikes, the Orcs have a nasty language.  Traditional foreplay would be right out for them; how would they ever "say my name" for one another?  No wonder Ocrs are always so bloodthirsty and violent, they're getting sub-par action.

I think you can make adamantine beds, by that'd be a huge waste.

Annoyingly, beds are one of the few things you cannot make from Adamantine. Pretty much the only way you can get non-wooden beds is from strange moods, and good luck getting enough of those for your entire population.

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

Quote from: wiki
Reasons you need wood

    * To build beds
          o Without beds your dwarves will get unhappy thoughts from sleeping on the ground
    * To build axles
          o Without axles your ability to transfer power is severely limited.
    * To build water wheels and windmills
          o These are the only generators of power. Without them, you'll be forced to do everything manually.
    * If you want obsidian short swords, they require one obsidian stone and one wood each (for a handle and scabbard, apparently).
          o If you have access to obsdian, these can be a great source of quick weaponry early in the game, before any steel works are up to speed. Even on a tree-lite map, each weapon takes less wood to produce than a steel weapon (unless you are using magma to fuel your smelters and forges).

Read the caption and look at the character in context of what I said.  :P

You might have a hard time even producing enough all-metal barrels and bins to keep your fort functional.

It takes 3 bars of metal to make 1 metal barrel or bin. That can really add up, even if you have lots of access to magnetite.

I know, I'm just referring to where the origins of the picture come from.

If you're willing to do a bit of modding you could easily mod in a wood called 'metal frame' or 'metal strut' and a smelter reaction to turn a bar of metal into 3 metal frame. Then you could have metal frame beds and metal frame axels, etc. metal frame buckets would be a bit odd. Maybe just call it metal plate, so you'll have metal plate beds? I dunno
