Even in french it sounds like very bad poetry. This wouldn't inspire me to fight off any invader, although the undead Istari-soldier with giant feet would.

Maybe civil has or had some slightly different connotation. Or maybe they needed four syllables that ended in 'er'.

I hear the french are great poets, but I've only ever managed to hear/read bad poetry from them. Oh, and I heard french rap once. That's, like, an oxymoron.

I think I figured it out: he is a soldier, and he is speaking to a civilian, who is his brother. It's simple actually.

As for french poetry, it's beautiful mainly because it sounds good, so translations often suck. Try Charles Baudelaire, who's the best poet there ever was in my opinion. I guess it would be good even just reading a translation for the meaning and the actual text for the musicality.
