Futurepages - To Conquer the Sky

Prologue

As Dwarven countries goes, there were few groups as unambitious as The Heroic Trumpets. In the nation’s five hundred years of history, its citizens have never bothered to expand beyond a single mountain hall called Sabremerchants. Nor had they involved themselves in politics, having nod even fought in a single war.
Neither was the country well-known. Sabremerchants was located deep in the mountains, and the only path through which it could be reached was straight through the haunted lands known as The Jungle of Bones. As a result few had even heard, of the dwarves of The Heroic Trumpets, and even fewer ever made the perilous trek to meet them in person.
However, on one fateful day in the year 500 everything changed.

Every dwarf in Sabremerchants was gathered in the great hall. They knew only that Alath Merchantwaxes, their king, was going to give a speech, the subject of which was unknown. As the king began to speak, none had realized that their destiny was about to change.
“My subject, as you all well know our situation here is intolerable. For too long we have been confined here in Sabremerchants. For too long we have watched the other races build their empire, while we’ve waited in this solitary mountain hall. And for too long we have been marginalized, ignored by the rest of the world.
This changes now. I have had a vision of our true purpose, our destiny. The time has come to expand, and show the world what we are made. To build a fortress that will become a legend, a fortress that will conquer the very sky. The time has come to build Futurepages, the ultimate fortress.
This undertaking will not be easy, nor will it be quick. It will take many years, and cost many lives before we are done. But we are dwarves, the chosen race of Armok, and there is nothing we cannot do. United there is no challenge we cannot overcome. Now we have much work to do.”

Over the next few weeks Sabremerchants was filled with a flurry of activity. Plans had to be made, supplies had to be gathered, and dwarves had to be trained. The king locked himself away with his most trusted advisors for a week, as he drew up the blueprints that would make his vision a reality. Futurepages would consist of a series of connected towers, each taller then the last, until they finally disappeared into the clouds.
At the same time the initial expedition was gathering. 500 years of isolation had left Sabremerchants with few of the supplies needed to support a large force, yet no one was willing to wait for them to be gathered. So it was decided that the first expedition would consist of a mere 7 dwarves. Their task was to establish temporary lodgings, for the dwarves yet to come.

OOC: Of course before I can begin I need a brave band of dwarves. I'm claiming two of them, but the other five are up for grabs. As usual, please post the name, gender, and skills of your dwarf, and any other information you wish to give.

Also I am using a few custom mods I've made, but none of the content, is going to show up for a while, as it's mostly new megabeasts, and a couple of civilizations designed only to show up in the late game where goblins start to lose their challenge.

In the interests of getting this thread moving I have decided not to wait for the last two dwarves to be claimed. With that said a brief update.

Chapter 1 Arrival:

Journal of Linthar Expedition Leader

Granite 1st:
When I was chosen to lead the expedition to found Futurepages, I thought that it was too good to be true. Now that I’ve reached my destination it’s obvious I was right. Futurepages is being built at the last place in all The Domain of Prophecies I would have ever chosen. That place being border of the swamp called The Dismal Bile, and the mountain chain known as The Spidery Spine, both of which are evil haunted lands. Not even the nearby magma pipe is enough to save this region.

Thankfully it is not my job to worry about the dangers of the region. My job is to oversee the construction of Futurepages. The task of defending the fort falls to a different dwarf named Calren, a skilled soldier, who’s been chosen to lead our future military.
During the long journey here, I got well acquainted with three of the other dwarves in the expedition. The first was Shadovarn a historian sent to record the events to come. He is a skilled miner, and his studies have given him a keen grasp of the value of material goods.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Secondly there is IHateOutside. She worries me. She’s taken to describing herself as the Head Liaison for Elves. Her skill set suggests otherwise. As a woodcutter and carpenter she’s far more likely to anger them then properly negotiate. Although angering elves is a favorite pastime of dwarves, I do not want to give up a potential trading partner, even though most of what the elves bring is worthless. On what’s hopefully a more promising note she also has a good deal of experience fighting with axes, which in this dangerous region will prove quite useful.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Finally there is Samus, the self proclaimed Maker of Death. He is quite skilled in mechanics, but little else. His talents will be needed eventually but for now unfortunately he will likely by delegated to hauling.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
The other two dwarves I know little about. One is a mason, and the other a farmer, but they were rather quiet on the journey here. I’m sure I’ll learn more in time.

Carlen’s Report:
The following document is classified top secret.

FUTUREPAGES MILITARY ASSESSMENT #1
CURRENT THREAT LEVEL: Moderate

The main threat towards Futurepages comes in the form of the undead infesting the region. Mostly there are trapped under layers of magma, or on isolated ledges in the nearby chasm, but there are countless thousands in the nearby regions who could attack at any time. For the moment only a band of zombie mountains goats, has ventured into the area, which poses little threat.
More alarming are the giant cave spider webs that have been sighted in the chasm. The location of the beasts themselves is unknown. Until the beasts have been found it is imperative that nobody approach the chasm. A single one of those spiders could kill the entire expedition. As such they are an extreme threat.

OOC: I should have the first update with actual gameplay up in a few days. There are also currently two unclaimed dwarves. A female mason, and a female planter/brewer

I'll go ahead and take the female planter/brewer/cook

Name:Cera
Occupation:Making yummy food

A dwarven machine may run on it's own but dwarves need food and drink, and she's both happy to consume as well as prepare and provide that food. In particular she likes making seed cakes. (Seed biscuits)

(Feel free to have me gather plants if you need to bolster the food supply, just be careful I don't wander too far. lol)

Name: Glass
Gender: Male
Profession: Siege Operator, Siege Engineer and Mechanic. NO MENIAL LABOR!
Title: Resident Madman
Fun Facts: Secretly killed a hammerer when he was drunk (whether I'm referring to the hammerer or Glass, you can decide). Everyone knows, but if anything they commend him.

The unclaimed mason in the fortress is female so do you want to claim her, or would you rather take the first male mason to migrate.

Unfortunately when I woke up this morning I discovered I was having computer problems so I'm going to have to put this on hold for now.
