Probably your fort then.

Or it could just be that the game decided you needed more bats. No-one but Toady really understands how Vermin work, Bats always seem to come in massive Batsplosions with no warning or reason to them and tend to appear inside and around underground areas, and that's about all i know.

Yeah, I've had Random Batsplosions tm, too. On a map with only magma pit, river and a lowish mountain. So, while I don't know what causes that, it sure as hell looks cool :)

I had a swarm of bats once.

No idea why, they just spawned.

Same thing with Pixies and Dragonflies once.

Bats, to the best of my knowledge, appear on the three kinds of Evil maps, possibly Savage as well.

The Batsplosion happens with all land/air vermin, some Dwarf just wandered over a swarm and disturbed them.  As has been said, it does happen in Adventure mode.  It's much more visible there, as well, since it gives you a message and you're always watching where you are anyway.

I thought that the icons had absolutely no bearing on the actual physical location of the vermin? I also thought Vermin just randomly teleported around, didn't realise that you could get 'swarms'.

I think they are actually physically there, even though they teleport around. I once saw a vermin bat get trapped in a dwarfs bedroom. If it was a true teleportation, it would have gotten out on it's own, but it was definetly trapped.

At least I think it was truly trapped.

It's pretty well established that Vermin do not move; they just teleport around. Turtles will appear inside water despite that water never being anywhere near another Turtle for example.

I've also seen toads and turtles appear in a desalination channel, despite both not bieng saltwater biome creatures. Sure I could pass off the turtles as bieng sea turtles, but amphibians can't handle saltwater.

I think that bats will congregate when you have open sided areas with a ceiling over them, which you can see in the OP's fort the bats are right next to an area with a ceiling, but not fully enclosed.
