HOLY GLIDING CHIROPTERS BATMAN!

Seriously though? I think its weird that you have ACTUAL bats flying around. Aren't they considered vermin in the game, not being Giant bats? Usually I'd suggest pulling out the crossbows and applying Dwarven Animal Safety Control tactics to the situation, but since that isn't feasible, we can just assume theres a lot of insects and fruit in the pants of your Dwarves.

Batsplosions are semi-common events in adventurer mode. IE: you wander around a human town (specifically the roof of their towers) and BAM - twenty bats are flying around you.

So yea, a trick of the RNG has caused a minor batsplosion in your fortress. Congrats?

Do you have a cave or something underground nearby? I've noticed that bats tend to 'spawn' inside caves in great numbers, and then randomly decide to just explode out of them and cover half the map before running back inside again.

If you want to deal with them, get some cats, otherwise get used to seeing bats everywhere. I'm guessing Toady tried to replicate the whole 'massive swarm of bats flying out of the cave at night' thing that happens in real life.

That's happened to me before. One fortress on a glacier, I took several attempts to get a valid start before the undead got me. One of those starts, the first thing that happened was my dwarves getting mobbed by a swarm of bats...the second thing that happened was my cat going on a killing spree, scattered corpses all across the ice.

Nope, i think it happens due to dwarf bones being left on the ground.

They wouldnt pick it up!

Funny story.
So i caught 2 hippos in traps, a great achievement for me, went out to get them, and then Touchtrust was hanging around, walked away and his lover stayed. well a hunter that once killed a hippo (only 2 hippos have ever died from my dwarves), got killed. turned the hippo into Stoodancient. so now the stupid fishermans are come out and fishing, so i send my marksdwarves out to kill the fish.

they kill about 5 fish in total, lost 4 dwarves. 1 marksdwarf got a martial trance and jumped in, 1 fisherman got pulled in. 1 fisherman got killed on land by a fish. 1 got pulled in.

all in all, its a bloodbath everytime i open that damned gate.

Chalk up another one who's seen a batsplosion, though mine was the very moment I'd embarked. And one of the team's cats instantly went John Woo on them as well.

I've had one before too. No underground features on the map save a magma pipe I was yet to breach. The fort was a couple of years in and over the trapdoor into my fort loads of bats appeared, I knew something was up because of all the cat mouth bug messages that popped up.

Artificial underground areas seem to work fine for bats too; i've never seen them on maps with no underground features at all, but i have had them appear on maps with no underground features after i built my fortress.

Considering the fact that the world just spontainiously generates vermin at-will, it would make sense.
