King is not coming
« on: August 01, 2009, 02:31:02 pm »

I've gotten the requirements for the king, it says he is coming, but ive already gotten 3-4 traders and two "Your fortress has attracted no immigrants this season" messages.....

Is this a bug or something?

Wait for the spring; most nobles arrive in the spring. Speaking of nobles, my fort has a immigration cap at 90 and we currently have 100 dwarves and a baron. Will I be able to earn a promotion to count and duke with these dwarves?

He might take a while to get there, but being over your population cap will not prevent him from arriving.

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

Nor will it prevent other migrants from showing up sometimes. Maybe children/nobles don't count for the pop cap.

Also, it seems that if you set the cap below a threshold you won't qualify for that threshold even if your population does rise above your stated cap. For example, I capped one of my forts at 40. I got massive migrant waves and was sitting pretty with about 55 dwarves, but they never held elections for a mayor (which happens at 50.) So to answer Elliott's question, I don't think you will get a count.

So...if I cannot get a count, I cannot get a duke...does this mean I cannot get a King? The wiki says the non-HFS King will only show up after I get my duke, but the init file when I was adjusting my pop cap said as long as it was over 90 I could get a King. I've set up a beautiful bedroom, throne room, dining hall and tomb for my king and I look forward to him finally showing up; will I never get him?

I've gotten kings on the first immigration wave (I modded in free adamantine from smelters).

They usually take a while.

I have the same question. Wiki says Duchy, which is at 140 pop. But the init file says 80. Which is right? Has anyone actually gotten a non-HFS non-adamantine-modded king with only 80 dwarves? 140 dwarves is too much for my FPS and attention span.

I don't want a HFS King though; I want him to show up with a Royal guard and an advisor and nice clothes and all that fun stuff. Toady, if you're hanging around this thread, do you know if the wiki is correct that we need a Duke first to get a non-adamantine King? If so, is the wiki correct that you need 140 pop for a Duchy? If that's true, is there anyway in the raws for me to adjust this because my computer struggles to run above 100 dwarves, even with no temperature.

If it's in the raws it must be true because Toady (armok be with him) creator of the game said so.

I agree with Urist. Steampunk is like Darth Vader winning Holland's Next Top Model. It would be awesome but not something I'd like in this game.
Unfortunately dying involves the amputation of the entire body from the dwarf.

I can't agree more. I want a king to come because I've *earned* it but I want to do it with quality, not quantity.
