Breeding Beak Dogs

I've read up on this for a bit, and I'm still somewhat confused.

The goblins of my area are invariably mounted on beak dogs. To the point that all of my people have beak dog gear (quiver, backpack, waterskin), armor, and shoes.

It's really quite irritating - they move quite quickly. But now I'm to the point where the only uncertain thing about an invasion is where -exactly- the squads of legendary champions make a mess.

I've got a Dungeon Master, and a row of (built) cages full of beak dog. I'm running 40d13, if that matters.

What -precisely- should I be doing to allow breeding?

I've got some ideas (they should be outside of cages, probably in a pit or restraints, I might need a DM) but I'm not positive that has a chance of success.

These aren't "wildlife," they were part of the invading force. But they aren't sentient. (One hopes, we're living off beak dog roast :)

Do I wait for the DM to tame them? Can I spark that somehow?

If all else fails, what -precisely- do I need to learn how to hack to get this to work?

I think that if you sling them into a pit outside of a cage, beakies will breed so long as you've managed to catch at least a breeding pair. Judging by the number you've caught, I'm pretty sure you have.

I've never toyed much with beakie breeding, though. The few beak dogs that blitz through the magma shower ahead of the lever-puller dwarf usually get thrown to the monkeys. (Pit full of tame rhesus macaques; I don't care if they're tiny little monkeys, they still have teeth and poo flinging!)

I've never managed to get beakdog riding gobbos before. The seiges eventually just stop and I never see them again.

They've been on beak dogs since practically the first attack here. And I've -crushed- a couple of the sieges.

I've got an inner keep (original defenses), a decent castle, and a moat circling the known universe... with lots of spread out bars I can raise to lock them all -inside- the moat. They can visit, they don't get to leave. :D

So it isn't a matter of me waiting for them to get strong enough. I must be near a significant goblin stronghold already.

So, should I be taming them before pitting them? They don't show up on my "Tame a large animal" list.Which means I'm relying upon my Dungeon Master to do the taming. Correct?

Hate to burst your bubble, but Beak Dogs don't have a [TAMEABLE] or [TAMEABLE_EXOTIC] tag. Means dwarves can't tame them. You could throw them into a death pit and let them eat your enemies, just be careful - if they escape while being pitted they will go after your dwarves, so be sure the dwarves who throw them into the pit either have a military escort or an assigned war dog or two as they're very powerful.

Are those tags something I can retroactively add to an existing game somehow? (Should I be reading up on modding? Or is it just hopeless?)

Plus, this is an 'old fort'. Practically everyone has had an extensive stint as Pump Operator as I was diverting the brook and putting floodgates across its mouth. Then the mandatory wrestling so I can draft anyone on a whim. The beak dogs are the ones needing a protective escort, we're used to eating them. ;)

Yeah, you can add those tags to your existing game. For reference, the tags are actually [PET] and [PET_EXOTIC]. The ones with the [PET_EXOTIC] tag are the ones that can only be tamed by dungeon masters. You could also add [trAINABLE] to make war beak dogs to help your dwarves in combat. Imagine that.

The lower body is ripped off and remains in the Beak Dog's grip!

Most excellent.

I added [PET] and [trAINABLE] to the Beak Dog raw, deleted 'data/objects' and my game didn't crash. :D The kennels now let "Tame large animal" show me Beak dogs.

The kobold thieves need to request a pay raise for hazardous duty.

Wasn't there some problem with mounted units in ambush mode? The horses gave birth to foals, "An Ambush! Curse them!" message, and then it gets a bit fuzzy for me. Did they attack the foals that had revealed them, or had they ignored them or were being chased away by them?

Because if it is the first, you're going to have a bit of problem there.

A quick scan of the stocks menu shows that one of the dead pack animals has a bin full of silk cloth!  It is speedily unforbidden, and my moody glassmaker sprints off to retrieve his prize amongst the smoking, charred, blood-soaked ruin that is the outdoors, totally oblivious to the carnage that was instigated on his behalf.

Because if it is the first, you're going to have a bit of problem there.

I believe the bug is mounts give birth, babys are somehow on your side, hourses are somehow civilian and they run from their own baby (yeah that sounds odd even as I type it but I believe its correct). Shouldn't matter if your just taming them as attack dog-type units

I've saw a post elsewhere on the forum that implied that even animals that come in from off the map (not ones with spawnpoints like wildlife and stuff) can breed, although it was merchant animals that were being talked about, plus I never had it happen myself. Maybe beak dogs stuck in a pit eventually breed too.

Becareful if anything gets 1 taste of dwarven blood it will always be hostile even if you tame'd it

The problem with hostile animals is that they will always be hostile, even after taming.

What you need to do is let a few beak dogs roam around for about a season or two, and then cage trap them again. When you get the message about beak puppies (I don't know what the children are called) being born, release the children and then let your champions deal with the original beak dogs.

Using this, I managed to get a thriving horse population from elf, human, and dwarf sieges (I'm playing as goblins) where no horse populations existed on my map.

Hmm.

I made a pen, and dumped eight Beak Dogs into it. (After luring all of my pets in there as part of the Master Plan.) They were listed as "Invader" on my "u" screen. I've added "PET" and "TRAINABLE" to the raws.

1) Is there a 'best practices' for pitting things? Because there was more fun involved than you'd think.

2) Horses can fight. Wow. I lured him into a doorway I could lock. (Yay planning!)

3) The children are called "Beak dog pups". And I got two in less than a year. They appeared on the map as "Hostile" under "u".

4) The other beak dogs eventually ripped them to shreds. Hum.

Should I be taming the "Invader" Beak dogs first? Because I was actually having more trouble pitting "Stray Beak Dogs" than regular old just-caught Beak Dogs.

And I have chains, will the breeding all go fine if every single Beak Dog is on a chain?
