Zero-Player Games
« on: August 01, 2009, 12:36:28 pm »

To wit, I want one. Progress Quest is an example of a "zero-player game", for instance.

So, if you got any suggestions for zero-player games, that would be good. I am, in particular, looking for zero-player games with good storylines too.

A zero-player game with a good story...

I know a few good visual novels that do not require any interaction except for clicking to move along the text...

... A book? A movie?

But the book and the movie storyline remain the same. The characters will always do whatever the director/author said, and will do the same things over and over. In a zero-player game, presumably there would be different things happening in each iteration of the game. Like in Progress Quest. One time, you may get the +5 Sword of Stabbing, and in the second game, you may get +3 Knife of Knifing. That sort of thing.

There would be brand new differences that would occur whenever you are playing the game. I hope I explain it well.

andrea: A game is a "an amusement or pastime", and Progress Quest is amusing and is a pastime, therefore, it is a game.

 So a randomly generated story?

That might not be a bad idea. And Dwarf Fortress Legends is supposed to be something like that.

Progress Quest is always the same simply by virtue of having everything be contextually and even statistically pointless.

It is worse then a movie because a movie has plot.

They may be a bit lacking in storylines, but have you looked at any of the artificial life simulators out there? I've played with Nanopond, and it seems progress-questy to me, but more awesome.

When I was a kid, I had a Monopoly game for the Nintendo.  Used to piss my parents off by setting it up with eight computer players and letting it go.  I remember being kind of entertained (for a few minutes) just watching it work.

My brother used to sometimes set up computer matches on Fifa games.  To be fair, it was to learn their tactics.
