7 is better than XP. Both performance wise and looks wise.

As for numerical titles... Well... Fuck knows. If video game developers can use any sequeling scheme they want... So can Microsoft.

Was there a windows 6 (and a 1, 2, 3 etc, like with GTA) or is it the 7th system they've released?

I think the download is still up. You can get it for free with a serial key that lasts until March.

 Interestingly, windows is currently on version number 6.1.

 And from looking at notes on the windows development, it seems unsurprisingly that Vista was meant to be a small update in comparison to 7. Which begs the question: Why did Microsoft advertise it so much?

Windows seven was under development for a long, long time. I don't doubt they did some last-minute changes after Vista, but they are already planning Windows 8. It look like nothing as simple as just a desperate flop.

If you don't have 10 feet in your room, squinting helps reduce the required distance.

Anyway, the Ackbar/ Barack anagram/ resemblence is also weird.
