I just go with Yer-ist. It sounds right to me.

Yikes, the Orcs have a nasty language.  Traditional foreplay would be right out for them; how would they ever "say my name" for one another?  No wonder Ocrs are always so bloodthirsty and violent, they're getting sub-par action.

I just sorta sounded out the name then streamlined it for ease-of-pronunciation.

It's pronounced like er-ist.  It's one of the old norse words for dwarf.  I remember playing Age of Mythology and sometimes Dwarves would say "Urist McSlavert" or something when selected.

Oooh-wrist.

Once I figure out how to umlaut custom names in DF, I shall be giving metalworkers the heavy metal umlaut, so it'll pronounce more like eugh-wrist.

Elves do it in trees. Humans do it in wooden structures. Dwarves? Dwarves do it underground. With magma.

Ur-ist.  Somewhat like German "original-is" (That doesn't make any sense, but it doesn't have to. :P ) with a harder "r"...  the "y" sound before a "u" is normal in English, but I can't think of any other language that does that, so with unfamiliar words I generally assume it's not there.

But really he's just a softie inside. They all are really. When megabeasts come to your fort you never welcome them inside and give them a hug, do you. You heartless bastards...

Oooh-wrist.

Or, more accurately, I say Oohr-ist.

The thing that confuses me about dorfs is this. Dorf 1 dies in an avalance or somesuch. Dorf 2 is friends with dorf 3 and dorf 1. Dorf 2 berserks because of his friends death and kills dorf 3. also a friend. W. T. F.
Clearly you've never been drunk.

Problem: some people read it differently.  "How it's written" is subjective.

No, it's always written the same or it's wrong. It's the readin' that's subjective.

And it's YER-ist. Although the Y in YER is muted, so it's almost like "ear-ist".

Thanks for that...  now I have the image of Urist McBooger walking up to me with a creepy smile and asking me if I want a "dwarven shower".

I pronounce it Oo-lu-ree-ss-t...
The Oo sounding like a Monkey's chatter, just lower pitched,
Then begin rolling your toueng to the R making an L sound,
Then use Ree sounding like Reed without the D.
Then Hiss the ss before cutting it off with a sudden T...

Give it a Scottish or Deep European (not Russian) Accent and Bobs your uncle...
