Because collars have a great deal of symbolism attached to them: masters and slaves, imprisonment and subjugation, owners and pets, etc. To ask a person to wear a collar summons the same images; specifically, that the person wearing the collar is inferior to the person not wearing one. In free society, this is an insult, because everyone is assumed to be equal.

This topic got a lot of replies really quickly. It is going down a dark path. Completely seriously :

Get a goth girlfriend. Or someone who fancies herself an old-school punk. There are single girls out there already wearing collars. Just snag one and nobody'll be the wiser.

I don't see how asking your girlfriend to wear a collar is any different from asking your girlfriend to try anal, or roleplay, or anything. In fact, he's already stated it's not really sexual. Which means it is no different from asking your girlfriend to wear skirts more. Besides, the symbolism is already cast aside. Collars are very common amongst the anarchists and gothic crowd.

Actually, those people might just be dumbasses, which makes it very 'lol' to see an anarchist (one who opposes control and the government, for those who don't know) wearing a collar (a symbol of slavery and control, as stated previously in the thread)
