Dwarven monestary, keepers of the adamantine
« on: July 29, 2009, 11:26:40 pm »

I had this crazy idea just now

First, you take some dwarves, only men, all preferably worshippers of the same god if possible, and place them in a monestary separated completely from the rest of the fort. Give them the finest picks available, supplies to grow their own food, make their own armor. It will be their responsibility, and theirs alone to seek out the precious adamantine deep within the mountain.

Several of them should train up to be champion wrestlers, your mighty dwarven monks. The others should train in shifts, but don't let them reach champion so they can still do jobs. Once they reach the adamantine they'll deliver it to the fort, if they see it fit to do so, through a delivery chute, their only connection to the other dwarves.

When the time comes to face the horrors from the deep, may your faith be strong and your hands stronger

Why not have the fortress deliver food through a chute, then have another chute for the monks adamantine?

Monk: Yay! Our great god has given us another miracle! Again! Again. Again.. Again... Once more.
Monk2: Could we get some more wood?

Also, nice idea!

Nah, the idea of the monestary is for them to be totally self sufficient.

Besides, if they're not growing their pea plants, how are they going to discover genetics?

Heck, actually... that would be a great, story-rich way to prevent the HFS from making its way into the rest of the fortress if it's unleashed, too. If there's no real path to the fort, the worst that can happen is the monastery falls and becomes a mini-Moria, damned and cut off from the fortress.

Either the monks are the protectors of the adamantine, or they're the most devout servants of their fortress, sealing themselves off in seclusion to provide that precious resource to their fellow dwarves, without placing the entire fort at risk.

I'd be against the food chute, though. A good monastery is self-sufficient in the basics of food and drink.

So it's a self-sufficient biodome? I'm pretty sure this idea has come up a lot. The isolated monastery is a good twist if it's a community fort or story whatever though.

I could swear there's a labour for that somewhere...

I agree with Urist. Steampunk is like Darth Vader winning Holland's Next Top Model. It would be awesome but not something I'd like in this game.
Unfortunately dying involves the amputation of the entire body from the dwarf.

Well genetics is supposed to be in the next version, and we'll have to experiment with it at some point. A monastery/farm seems a good way to me.

This'll work especially well with the addition of burrows coming up, I'm thinking. You could have paths in and out and dwarves would still stay separate.

Unfortunately, some of the HFS can fly. So they will fly up the chute you use to transfer food to the monks, and there will be much screaming, bloody body parts, and miasma.

So some HFS can fly upwards rather than just fly over channels? That puts a pause in my plan a little.

Yikes, the Orcs have a nasty language.  Traditional foreplay would be right out for them; how would they ever "say my name" for one another?  No wonder Ocrs are always so bloodthirsty and violent, they're getting sub-par action.

That's why just before you hit the HFS, you get the Monks to block up the pipe in which the food comes down.

Think of it that they're refusing food, and fasting so that their Deity favours them in the upcoming battle
