Alienware: Hey Welcome to alienware what can I get you?
You: I'd like a massively overpriced laptop, with a huge mark up on price due to your branding.
Alienware: Would you like low battery life with that, so much so, that just buying a similarly priced - way better desktop is a better idea?
You: Yes.
Alienware: Ok, sounds good, how you would like to receive your laptop?
You: Just send it where I put my head, MY ASS.

Gamer laptops aren't bought for battery life... They are bought so that you can stick it in a bag and set up in class, at your friend's, or at Starbucks.

I couldn't do that.   :P  I'd spill coffee on it or something.

they have desktops designed for that purpose too, all in all i'd take one of those, that way i could build it from the ground up and have one then upgrade it later on.  on the plus side if you spill bunch of stuff on the keyboard it won't break, especially if you get one of those roll up ones.

If the issue is computing power, it could work by making the iphone a terminal that gets a stream of ASCII characters and sends back input signals, but that depends on the feasibility of making and maintaining such a connection with a PC in the first place.

Why yes, it's far easier and more practical to lug around a monitor, keyboard, mouse, desktop case, and various wires than to take a silly laptop!

Why not just carry around a monitor, with the batteries in one pocket, HDD in the other, and then sew your RAM, CPU, graphics and sound card to the inside of a big trench coat? Boom, portable computer!

Generally speaking though, building your own computer (even partially- get a cheap assembled computer and beef it up) is way cheaper than buying a name brand PC.

Just get a desktop.
I have both, and both serve their roles.
The problems with laptops are overheating and price, other than that, it's the same desktop with smaller parts and less space for ventilation.

If that causes problems for you, then you're doing something wrong.  Not sure what, but it might involve your choice of IO equipment.

Yes, actually, I am trying to get myself banned.  I wish Toady would quit working on this worthless piece of junk and go back to teaching math.

I have grudge with laptops.  I have had 3 damn ones that all went cablooey.  It's probably just bad luck, but my first desktop has been serving me faithfully for years.

if you have ever taken apart both a laptop and a desktop, you'll notice that they have pretty much the same stuff.  keep in mind we are talking about a gaming laptop, for a gamer.  so you are still talking about a mouse (no real gamer uses a touch pad), a keyboard, a monitor, and a power supply.  both fit in a backpack, and both need a wall socket.  the desktop has one extra wire (for the keyboard), is bulkier and has a negligible weight increase, while it is also more upgradable, cheaper, and slightly more durable.  if the downsides bug you, then there are better options than a gamer laptop.

frankley a gamer laptop is a middle ground between a laptop and the current version of baby AT desktops , it can't do either well enough to replace them, and the differences between the two is entirely in power consumption and battery capacity, so unless there is some sort of energy breakthrough to make electricity from a power plant virtually free there won't be a gap wide enough to warrant a gamer laptop.

p.s. and we haven't even gotten into the minipc, or mac mini.

Well for a 'middle ground' computer that laptop can run pretty much any game out on the market today, and run it well. I was more pointing out the gain vs loss on a small PC vs a laptop. You gain a marginal performance increase but lose the ability to just toss the laptop in your backpack and go. You cannot equate carrying a PC, montor, keyboard, mouse, and wires with the ease of folding a laptop+power supply up and sliding it in the backpack and going. Yes most people would also bring a mouse, but why would you bring an extra keyboard/monitor?

p.s. and we haven't even gotten into the minipc, or mac mini.

Why would anything apple related be brought up in a discussion about gaming? Or good computers for that matter.

Oi!  I've been using a touchpad to play all of my games for ~3 years now.  I regularly get to the top of the scoreboards in stuff like CS:S and TF2.  You can play games pretty easily and functionally with a touchpad, with practice.  Just crank the sensitivity up.
