Also, I think it's been explained that if the real-self is lethally injured, the injury will bleed over into the dreamself, on a time delay, eventually killing them unless the real-self is either corpsesmooched or Quest Bedded.  I think it was in one of Hussie's Formspring answers.

Wasn't Jade prospit dreaming long before the game activated (overtly, anyway) on their world, though? Couple other examples of that, too, iirc. They're presumably game constants with no history to the same extent the players themselves are.

I suppose I should start from the beginning.
In the beginning
  It all started, late one night, when I was browsing SFM videos, and came across this particular video. The music seemed oddly familiar, though checking the video description confirmed that I had never heard it before. So I searched Youtube and came across this. I poked through various related videos, enjoying the music and what not. (In fact, one of the first songs I came across was Cascade.) While the related videos have changed since then, I eventually came to the realization of, "Oh, this, '"Homestruck"' is where those weird gray-skinned people with orange horns come from!"
I searched, I saw, I searched, I saw, I sold my soul.
After that, using my terrible Google-Fu^TM, one of the first things I searched was, "What is Homestruck?" One of the pages I read while 'researching' was the Know Your Meme page on Homestuck. (Note: I did not watch the video, and still haven't. Apparently, it's terrible, so lucky me.) At some point I decided to hunt down and read beginning of the comic itself. At first I was wary, due to the all consuming nature of such a subject. Thankfully, at least in the moment, I found the beginning dull, and stopped reading for a bit. I should mention that I think this took place over a few days, not just that night, but it was months ago, so I don't recall.
You all know what happened next.
  However, I came back. I read, I saw, and lost 50 or so hours of my life over the next few months. The rest is history. The funny thing, is I actually remember Homestuck from earlier in my life. I remember, vaguely, 'playing' Homestuck some few years ago, but stopped since I found it boring. I suppose it was a good thing I didn't get into it then, since that could of complicated things then.
This fandom is terrifying.
  I don't know what to talk about now, other than random stuff pertaining to Homestuck. Such as how every person's hair is a DAMN BIRD if you look at it. Also, Jade's hair looks like dog ears from the right angle.

  I suppose I should go into more details of my reading. Act 1 I found dull at first, but then it grew on me. Looking back at it in retrospect, I miss it. I miss when everything was so much simpler and less depressing. Act 2 and 3 I remember, but I don't remember the specific details. I did read the intermission, and I'm glad I did, since it was later on very important. I remember around ACT 4 getting exasperated by the wall after wall of text, but got used to it. Now that I mention the walls of text the trolls threw at us, I want to go back and re-read the early parts of Homestuck, to see the old troll logs, now that I know who the trolls are and what not. Who was the troll that got severely counter-trolled by Dave? Tavros? Anyway, Act 5. This is where I got bored again. I found the trolls so dull initially. It wasn't until Act 5 Act 2 that I was interested again.
DAVExJADE. OH FUCK. Did I just say/write that!?
  Act 5, Act 2, is also where people started dieing left and right. I had heard that people died a lot in this, so I was careful not to develop any attachments to any of the characters. (Except for WV/Mayor, and you all should know how that went.) This didn't mean I didn't hate some of the characters. The one troll I enjoyed seeing die also happened to be my Patron Troll, but I don't care, he was an ass and a half.
My god, it has come back to consume and haunt my soul. SHIPPING
  Anyway, onto,  S:Cascade:EOA5. My initial goal was to reach this before 4/13/13, and I was successful in that. I must say, my simple peanut of a brain imploded itself when it realized the border had been changing sizes. "What the hell!? Why does this occupy my entire monitor!?" As mentioned earlier, I had heard music for Cascade., though I hadn't managed to figure out what the image meant until I finally watched the flash. I should mention though, Jade's animation really bothered me for some reason. I think it was because all the flash animations in Homestuck are nothing but the clever use of sliding and very low-frame animations. In general, using sliding for Human animations just doesn't look good, even if it saves a fuck-ton of time.
I wasn't joking about that ship. For some weird reason, people despise that one more than any other ship.
  Act 6, Act-ception. That started to get ridiculous. Act 6 Act 5 Act 2!? (Which was terrifying, by the way.) Act 6 Intermission 5 INTERMISSION 5!? Ironically, Act 6 has been far shorter than I expected/was lead on to believe. Anyway, Act 6 in a nutshell: alpha kids, romance shenanigans, Mr. Erisol flipping Jake off, Trickster mode (OH GOD), A new species of Assholes Aliens, )(IC, Dancestors, The Golden Ship Boat, Rose getting shit-faced, and so on.
Something to do with how normal and boring the ship is?
  Not sure what to talk about, other than that the fandom is horrifying and a Homestuck Anime would be an ill-fated pile of crap due to the text logs and hypertext style of the comic.
Oh fuck I'm out of transparent ink.
  That's all I can think of for now. Now I need to figure out a way to regain the 50+ hours of my life I lost.

Act 6 is actually longer than Act 5, I'm pretty sure, and that was a big-ass mofo.

Act 6 has been broken up into sub-acts, so it's sightly less of an ugly beast. Act 5 just has Act 5 and Act 5 Act 2.

Although some homestucks are less weird than others. Some people I know are, but I'd have never guessed it until they'd make a reference or two to it. I'm pretty weird myself, but I hope to god or whatever you believe in that I never get lumped in with the Tumblr crowd.

I should mention I tried to get my sister to read Homestuck, but refused. One of her reason's being, "Hussie is an ass."

Here's what I pieced together: My sister does online, paid, artwork commissions. I'm guessing someone asked for a commission of a Homestuck character. She looks through the legalities of doing this commission, and even got in contact with Hussie's fiance. My sister interpreted how they handled everything as very rude and aggressive, and as such, refuses to read Homestuck out of a grudge.

That, and she frequents Tumblr.
