Although we have to remember, Scratch is pulling the strings here, as always. He knew this would happen, and set up the escape rout for this very reason. Perhaps so that Spades could deliver the cuestaff to unknowingly?

Seems like it's setting up for a massive alchemy, doesn't it?  Cueball-eyed Jack, Felt-boss Spades, Soul-destroyer Dirk, then... cherubic Caliborn?  ... Or, oh gosh, alt-Calliope.

Bec Noir.  And I'll bet this was all arranged by the Condesce, not LE.  Too many moving parts for LE's smash-and-grab approach.
